Alpha Kappa Alpha Fashionetta Pageant

The members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Chapter held the Miss Fashionetta Pageant on June 27 at Tubman Theatre on the campus of Livingstone College. The Miss Fashionetta Pageant is the annual fundraiser sponsored by Delta Xi Omega to raise funds to support community service projects. The sorority also supports the Educational Grants, Rowan Helping Ministries, Christmas Happiness and UNCF.

Participants in the Miss Fashionetta Pageant were elementary school young ladies sponsored by chapter members. Participants were involved in numerous activities including authoring “Shero” books, designing Mommy Baskets and learning an original dance choreographed by Krystal Sturkes. Participants presented a “Parade of Fashions,” modeling fashions for school, casual and play.

A total of ten young ladies participated with Zahria Evans being crowned Miss Fashionetta 2015. Zahria is the daughter of Linda Cowan and Joseph Evans.

First runner-up was Gabrielle Jumah. Gabrielle’s parents are Mr.and Mrs. Yaw Jumah. Gabrielle was voted Miss Congeniality by the other participants.

Other participants were Jai’da Atkins, daughter of Joey Atkins and granddaughter of Debra Atkins; Joi Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Davis Jr.; Zionah Davis, daughter of Ta’Shara Davis and Ryan Shuford; Tiffani Gadson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DeMonte Harris and the late Ahmed Bognuda; Natalia Hunter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hunter; Nadia Lindsey, daughter of Alicia Brown and Tracey Lindsey; Mia Mason, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Damien Mason; and Comfort Rodriguez, daughter of Amber Rodriquez.

Escorts and ushers for the Fashionetta Pageant were Ethan Sellers, Jeremiah Booker, Avery Black, Na’Kari Hunter, Ahmiel Torrence, Nehemiah Mason, Marvin Green II, Jacob Joseph, Mario Lynn, Elijah Sellers and Aden Black.

Entertainment for the pageant was provided by Sari Lewin of Krystal’s Dance School, Tja”Lyza Walker and Anointed Vessels of El Shaddai of Southern City AME Zion Church. Amber Gilmore and Sharette Jones from Henderson Grove Baptist Church also provided entertainment in the form of a praise dance.

Lillian L. Morgan is president of the local chapter and Shelia- Brown Miller is fundraiser committee chairman.

 

The Rowan Redbuds

The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club met Thursday, July 23, at the Rowan Public Library.

President Kim Fahs presided. Mark Martin, certified arborist for the City of Salisbury, was the speaker. He shared with us some behind the scenes on Salisbury’s “Urban Trees.”

Corriher reunion

The annual Corriher reunion iis planned for Sunday, Aug. 16, at Sloan Park from11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

 

Call for Volunteers

Novant Health Rowan Medical Center has a new volunteer opportunity for patient escorts in Wilson Smith Outpatient Center and to assist families in the Emergency Department. Volunteers will also be accepted for gift shop, surgical waiting room, flower delivery and ancillary support.
