Brian Miller on Monday became the second incumbent to file for re-election to Salisbury City Council.

Three of the council’s incumbents have announced they won’t seek new terms. Miller and Councilwoman Karen Alexander are the only incumbents in a field of more than a dozen candidates.

Miller, a 46-year-old banker, will seek his fourth term in office. In a written statement, Miller listed a number of priorities if re-elected, including being a champion for Salisbury’s historic downtown, advocating for neighborhood revitalization, being a voice for improving the city’s schools, economic development, supporting the arts community and encouraging transparency and accountability.

“Courage and leadership are more than just words, and will be needed in the coming years to help Salisbury achieve the best possible future,” Miller wrote. “The choices you make in November will have a lasting impact on our community. I ask that you choose wisely, and pay less attention to the rhetoric of the election season, and more attention to each candidate’s demonstrated leadership abilities to lead and work well with others.”

He said Salisbury has faced many challenges in the previous six years — the length of his time on the council. With an improving local and regional economy, Miller said, Salisbury’s best days are ahead.

Miller is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

He has been a member of the Downtown Salisbury Inc. board since 1999, a former chairman of the Salisbury Planning Board, treasurer of Rowan County United Way, a former chairman of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury board of trustees, a little league coach, a board member of North Hills Christian School and member of other community organizations.

Miller and his wife Amy live in Salisbury and have three children.
