Area Sports Briefs: Rowan 14U softball wins state

The Rowan Little League 14U softball all-stars won the state championship in Sylva.
Rowan beat Jackson County in the championship game.
Hannah Roberts and Alyssa Zocchi were dominant in the circle.
Ashlyn Fritz, Jentri Meadows and Ally Young paced the offense.
Katelyn McGee was a defensive standout.
Other team members inclue Ezra Nance, Kayleigh Goodman, Chloe Breedlove, Katie Jewell, Kim Sharp, Gabby Rager and Ayden Gilmore.
The manager is Jimmy Roberts. Coaches are Scott Young and Jeff Gilmore.
The girls advance to regional play in Fort Myers, Fla., July 25-28.
The girls and Rowan Little League will need financial support for travel and lodging.
Anyone who wants to donate can contact a Rowan Little League board member, coach or player.
• Rowan’s 10U softball team won its second straight state championship on Monday in Wilmington.

Carson graduate Tyler Mason will continue his track and field and education at Lees-McRae.

Local golf
NC Junior Classic
Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 79-71 — 150 and finished 10th in the North Carolina Big I Junior Classic.
Yatawara played at Pine Needles Golf Club in Southern Pines on Saturday and Sunday.
Corbin Hills
Championship Match Play in the 37th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur begins on Friday.
Carolinas PGA
In the Tidewater CPGA Senior Open, Kannapolis’ Rick Lewallen shot 73 and tied for third.
CGA 13-under
Salisbury’s Charlie Barr is playing in the Carolinas golf Association’s 18th North Carolina 13-under championship at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course.
Forty-four players played an 18-hole qualifier on Monday. Barr shot 72 for third place. The first round of nine-hole match play was Monday afternoon.
Barr was down one with two holes to go before he tied the match. Barr won on the 10th hole to advance to the round of 16 which will be played on Tuesday.
Michael Childress is Barr’s caddie.
Warrior
Registration is ongoing for the Rowan Junior Open.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators promoted first baseman/outfielder Nick Basto to the Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem Dash on Monday. Kannapolis receives outfielder Michael Suiter from the Dash in a corresponding move.

West football seats
West Rowan High School reserved seating renewals are being accepted until Aug. 10.
Anyone wishing to renew their seats from last year needs to do so.
New seats may be purchased on Aug. 11. Contact Coach Bell @ belltm@rss.k12.nc.us to renew your seats.

3-on-3 hoops
The Rowan Hurricanes and Carolina Hoopfest are hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on July 25 from noon until 5 p.m.
The tournament is at China Grove Middle School. Divisions are girls and boys, high school girls and boys and 18-plus.
There will be entertainment and vendors. Vendors can reserve a spot by going to www.carolinahoopfest.com.
