Salisbury businesswoman Constance Johnson last week filed for a spot on the Salisbury City Council.

Johnson, 53, is self-employed through her event planning business The Carolina Taste. She was one of the first candidates to file for the council race. If successful, Johnson said she would focus on the city’s housing market and small business.

“I am running because I have creative and proven means for rebuilding the city’s housing market, as well as grow the business revenues through focusing on the small businesses through my work with Sigal Construction, AICPA, the Black Political Caucus Affordable Housing Committee and CityPolitical Magazine,” Johnson said in an emailed statement. “Most importantly, God tells me that I can get the job done.”

Johnson’s resume includes a wealth of event planning experience. She has also been the publisher of multiple small news outlets.

She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Livingstone College. Later, she earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

In addition to her event planning business, Johnson has also run unsuccessfully for a number of political positions, including: Rowan-Salisbury School Board in 2012, State Senate District 34 in 2014 and North Carolina Democratic Party chair in 2015.

Johnson’s community involvement includes being the project director for the Business and Food Industry Conference, which offered contracts, grands and loans training to small businesses; the co-mistress of ceremony and board director for the Black Political Caucus banquets in Charlotte; and the mistress of ceremony for the Black Golfer’s Association annual banquet in Charlotte.
