Area Sports Briefs: Edwards makes ace

Former Salisbury High golfer Eric Edwards made a hole-in-one Wednesday during his practice round for the Carolinas Amateur Golf Championship.
Edwards aced the 205-yard No. 17 hole at the Greensboro Country Club Farm Course with a 4-iron.
Witnessing the feat was playing partner Jake Kennedy.

Irish Creek
In the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open at The Club at Irish Creek, Michael Schrader took the first-round lead by one shot with a sizzling 62 on a rainy Wednesday.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 31-34 — 65 and is tied for eighth.

GARS
Sixty-one GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team at minus-13 consisted of Winsten Mahaffey, Ernest Wagner, Bob Clark, and Ross Howard.
The second-place team with a minus-12 consisted of David Adams, Bob Niekras, Larry Fowler, and Johnny Shook
The third-place team with a minus-11 consisted of Lou Manning, Ralph Brown, John Rader and J.C. Ritchie
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was David Scearce
Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Tim Messenger.

Prep football
West Rowan offensive lineman Jacob Radtke has been added to the West roster for the East-West All-Star Football Game.
Radtke was an All-Rowan County and All-South Piedmont Conference performer.
Radtke joins a roster that includes East Rowan offensive lineman Daniel Jones, North Rowan running back JaReke Chambers and A.L. Brown DB/ kick returner Daveon Perry.
A.L. Brown’s Mike Newsome is the head coach of the West squad.
The game will be played on Wednesday, July 22, at 8 p.m. at Greensboro’s Jamieson Stadium.

Intimidators
Thad Lowry and Kelvis Valerio combined for a shutout as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Charleston RiverDogs 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Intimidators (42-41, 7-7 second half) have thrown a league-high 11 shutouts.
Lowry (9-4) opened with six scoreless frames, keeping Charleston hitless from the third through sixth innings.
Kannapolis continues a season-long nine-game road trip in Charleston on Thursday.

Junior Legion
The West Rowan-Carson Junior Legion game was rained out Wednesday.
The teams play Thursday at Carson.
The teams will play Friday at West Rowan. All youth wearing their softball/baseball jersey will get free admission to the game at West Rowan.

3-on-3 hoops
The Rowan Hurricanes and Carolina Hoopfest are hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on July 25 from noon until 5 p.m.
The tournament is at China Grove Middle School.
Divisions are girls and boys, high school girls and boys and 18-plus.
There will be entertainment and vendors. Vendors can reserve a spot by going to www.carolinahoopfest.com.
