Area Sports Briefs: Edwards shoots 77 in first round

Salisbury High graduate Eric Edwards, who just finished his freshman year at George Mason, is playing in the 115th North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2.
The North and South is the longest consecutive running amateur championship in the U.S. Previous champs include Jack Nicklaus and Davis Love.
The tournament has a 7,000-yard, par-70 setup with U.S. Open hole locations.
Edwards shot 7-over 77 in Monday’s first round and is tied for 42nd, eight shots back of the leader. Edwards birded the 536-yard No. 5 hole. He made four bogeys and two double bogeys. He’ll tee off at 7:09 on Tuesday.
Ninety-six golfers are in the field. After three rounds of stroke play, the top 16 advance to match play. The tournament runs through July 3.

Junior Legion
Carson’s Junior Legion baseball team won 17-3 against Lake Norman on Monday.
Zack Lee was the winning pitcher.
Ben Shoaf had three hits, including two doubles. Daniel Leonard and Maddux Holshouser had two hits each.
Logan Ridenhour and Sollie Holshouser drove in three runs each.
Carson hosts Rowan County at 7 on Tuesday.
• The Kannapolis O’s rolled 9-0 against Mooresville on Monday with Carson Bost pitching a shutout.
Luke Nelson had three hits. John Brosnahan had three RBIs. Bost drove in two runs.

American Legion
The final day of the regular season is Tuesday.
The Area III All-Star Game is set for Asheboro’s McCrary Park (North vs. South) on Wednesday.
The Area III playoffs are set to begin on Friday.
Rowan County and High Point have earned first-round byes.
First-round pairings will be finalized by Tuesday’s results.
In the best-of-three first round, the No. 3 seed plays the No. 14 seed, No. 4 plays No. 13, No. 5 vs. No. 12, No. 6 vs. No. 11, No. 7 vs. No. 10 and No. 9 vs. No. 8. The higher seed hosts the opening game.
Only three days have been allotted (July 3-5) to play the first round. Weather may become a factor and could shorten a series, so the outcome of Game 1 will be critical.
Rowan and High Point will join the action on July 6 when they host opening games in the best-of-five second round.
Six nights (July 6-11) have been allotted to play five games.

Little League softball
Rowan County Little League 7-8, 9-10 and 13-14 all-star teams have advanced to the state tournament. Rowan’s 11-12 team plays at home on Tuesday at 8 p.m. against East Surry in the winner’s bracket final.

Intimidators
Asheville pitcher Helmis Rodriguez shutout Kannapolis for seven innings to lead the Tourists to a 6-1 win against the Intimidators in South Atlantic League action on Monday.
The Intimidators hit into a season-high four double plays.
Kannapolis (1-4 second half, 36-38 overall) has matched its longest losing skid of the season and has lost four straight for the first time since May 3-7.
Dom Nunez his his second homer of the series for Asheville.
Kannapolis drew four straight walks — all with two outs — in the bottom of the eighth to get on the board.
Zach Thompson (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) and seven hits in six innings.
Kannapolis begins a four-game series against the West Virginia Power (Pittsburgh Pirates) on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
