WRHS grad returns to Salisbury with band
2006 West Rowan grad Matt Thies, lead singer for the band Open Wire, will perform in his hometown for the first time in a decade, on Saturday June 27, at Uncle Buck’s downtown.
Matt says of Open Wire: “It’s is a rare form of musical group, who exclusively and proudly goes their own way in their field. This is a band that plays the music they want to hear — loud and heavy, groovy and soulful. They keep the guitars and microphone wireless (truly an open wire) so they can get down in the crowd.”
Phillip Milligan (drums), Daniel Wuensch (guitar) and Eric Leray (bass guitar) have been playing together since high school and known each other for longer. Later, by way of a random bummed cigarette, Daniel met Matt Thies (vocals) and began to jam and found a perfect fit. Since then Open Wire has been playing shows all over North Carolina and into Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Live in concert at the Mean Mug
Nashville musician James Scott is a singer, songwriter and solo fingerstyle steel-string guitarist and flat-picker and will be performing live in a free concert on Sunday, June 28 from 5 until 8 p.m. Having a background in Jazz, Bluegrass, Folk, Traditional, Americana and Celtic music, James Scott has been working towards synthesizing elements of each of these genres into his own personal vision. That vision is directed by his spiritual pursuit that largely originates from his connection to the power of vibration, and nature. Mean Mug Coffee Company is located at 1024 S. Free family concerts and movies this summer
In concert this weekend is local favorite Motel Soap. Motel soap is comprised of Alex Bost on guitar; Gray Fallin on drums and vocals; Joe Gminder on vocals, guitar and keyboard; Lonnie Carpenter on vocals and guitar; Mark Jennings on bass guitar and vocals; Mark Holland on keyboard; Rick Almond on sax, cowbell and vocals and Eddie Ritch on keyboards.
Concerts will be held the last Saturday of each month through Oct. 31. Feel free to bring a chair and relax with the music.
Movies in the Park is Friday at City Park, showing “Mr. Peabody and Sherman.” Bring your chairs or blankets and enjoy a movie under the stars. Entertainment begins at 8 p.m. followed by the movie at 9 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Praise Grass opens at Friday’s Pickin’ for the Master
Bluegrass lovers looking for a family environment to enjoy local music will enjoy “Picking for the Master,” hosted by Trading Ford Baptist Church.
At 7 p.m. on Friday the group Praise Grass, from neighboring Providence Methodist Church on Bringle Ferry Road, will play the opening set. All pickers are invited to join in the jam session that follows.
Concessions are available and doors open at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge, but the hat will be passed to help bring in more talent from the surrounding area in future months. The Picking for the Master event is the last Friday night of each month and is a ministry of Trading Ford Baptist Church.
The Carolina Artist EXPO
Join The Carolina Artist EXPO 2015 at the Civic Center Aug. 19 through 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the judged show is free and open to public. The reception and award ceremony will be held Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center, 315 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

CHICKWEED — more than just music

Donations accepted ~ 100% will be donated to the Rowan Family Crisis Council. Blueberry Fest at SandyCreek Farm
Lexington — Admission is free to this fun-filled day-long blueberry festival on Saturday from 11 am to 3 p.m.
Ken Davis and Brannon Gilliam will provide live musical performances and Jeannie Leonard will conduct a cooking demo and tasting. There will be a kids’ activity area with face painting, and the corn hole boards will be out.
A picnic area is available, or ask about ordering lunch. Guests may bring beer and/or wine. And a chair.
This year Twin City Artisans will join the lineup featuring glass, jewelry, baskets, fiber art and more.
