Rowan County’s municipal elections officially start in two weeks, and more than three dozen positions will be up for grabs.

Filing for 2015 municipal elections begins at 8 a.m. on July 6 at 8 a.m and continues until noon on July 17. A total of 42 elected offices will be on ballots. Voters are only able to choose candidates who are seeking office in the same municipality as the voters’ residences.

Filing fees range from $5 to $30, and depend on the particular municipality. To file for a position candidates must go to the Rowan County Board of Elections, which is located on the first floor of the county’s administrative building at 130 W. Innes St.

In most municipalities, the mayor and board members are elected in separate races. In Salisbury, voters elect the city council members, who then choose a mayor — typically the person who got the most votes in the council race.

Candidates must be residents and qualified voters of the town or city in which they file for office.
