More discard clues

When attending the Charlotte Regional I sat in on a lecture for the 299’ers.

The teacher opened with the statement, “Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to tell your partner what he should lead at his next opportunity?”  It sure is a great idea.  Here are her suggestions.

Better known as the Odd/Even , here’s how it can work. If you discard an odd card you’re asking for that suit to be lead. Her statement: “Odd is god.”

If on the other hand you wish something else to be lead, look for an even card to discard. A high even card discard asks for the higher of the outside suits and a low even card asks for the lower of the outside suits. As with any system, you may not be able to use these cues all the time.  Do your best. Be sure you and partner, as always, are using the same signals.

Maureen Busse and Loyd Hill had the best N/S score bidding 2CS making 5, while Wade Lowder and BettyBonner Steele scored best E/W by defeating their opponent’s 3NN 1 trick. Usually you want to go for a NT contract but in this hand only one partnership made a 2NT score while all others made their Club bids.
