American Legion Baseball: Rowan routs Mocksville

MOCKSVILLE — Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team won its 10th straight game on Sunday, pounding Mocksville, 16-0, at Rich Park. The game was shortened to seven innings by the mercy rule.
The winning streak is Rowan County’s longest since reeling off 13 straight victories during the 2013 season.
Rowan County (12-4, 7-0) stayed unbeaten in Area III league games.
Riley Myers won his third straight decision on the mound. Myers started, worked five innings and allowed five hits. He got relief help from Tyler Scruggs, John Owen and Cory Fries.
Rowan County had 11 hits. Harrison Baucom and Michael Caldwell had three hits each. Juan Garcia had two doubles and two RBIs. Hunter Shepherd had a two-run single. Jeremy Simpson had a double.
Baucom scored four runs and drove in three out of the leadoff spot. Caldwell produced five RBIs and belted a three-run homer to close the scoring in the sixth inning.
Rowan scored a run in the first inning and made it 6-0 in the second frame with five unearned runs. After an error extended the inning, Baucom, Caldwell and Garcia delivered two-out hits.
Two wild pitches helped Rowan tack on three runs in the fourth inning. Shepherd’s two-run single highlighted Rowan’s four-run fifth that pushed the lead to 13-0.
Brett Fulk took the loss for Mocksville.
Mocksville (3-12, 1-5) hosts Randolph County on Monday. Rowan County is off Monday and returns to action at Newman Park on Tuesday against Stanly County.
Stanly County was the last team to beat Rowan, taking an 8-2 decision on June 4, in a non-league game.
