KANNAPOLIS — Kannapolis Police Department promotes Lt. Terry Spry, who has over 20 years in law enforcement to captain, overseeing field operations.

Spry began his career with the department in 1994, was promoted to sergeant in 2004 and lieutenant in 2010. He has worked as a patrol officer, traffic officer, criminal investigator, patrol supervisor, and is currently the commander of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He has received numerous awards during his career including an honor in 1997 with the South Rowan Optimist Club Officer of the Year Award and was a co-recipient of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Officer of the Year Award. In 1999, Spry also received the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Award and the Royal Oaks Optimist Club Officer of the Year Award.

Under his leadership, the Felony Investigations Unit received a Unit Commendation in 2014 for identifying, charging and capturing a total of 12 suspects that were responsible for six separate homicides between August 2011 and August 2013.

Spry holds an Advanced Law Enforcement certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. He is a graduate of South Rowan High School, attended Pfeiffer College, and earned an Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice Technology from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.  Additionally, he has also completed thousands of hours of advanced law enforcement training.

Spry and his wife Meredith have one son, Kaleb. The family attends Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.
