The second Salisbury Streets Alive event will be held Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. downtown.
A version of the Open Streets Project, the event temporarily closes streets to all car traffic so that people can use them for other activities, like walking, bicycling, dancing, playing and socializing.
The streets affected will be the block surrounding the Rowan Public Library including Church, Bank, Jackson and Fisher streets; Main Street will not be closed during the event.
The closed streets will be filled with many different exhibitors showcasing their business, kid/adult friendly activities, and even a rock wall exclusively sponsored by Novant Health.
Street performers and musicians are also welcome to stroll around during the event to add to the atmosphere and reminded to keep with the family-friendly theme. Each exhibitor is encouraged to conduct a fun activity of their choosing. The event is free to everyone.
The streets will close approximately one to two hours prior to the event for setup and open up after 6 p.m. as soon as all the vendors have left.
In preparation for the 2015 Salisbury Streets Alive, a group from Salisbury traveled to Carrboro on April 12 to attend their open streets event.
“It was truly amazing to see the mass number people simply enjoying being outdoors and socializing together in a safe environment for pedestrians,” said Mollie Ruf, promotions director with Downtown Salisbury Inc.
Eric Phillips, owner of Skinny Wheels Bike Shop in downtown Salisbury said, “I really hope to see our open streets initiative grow to be several events throughout the year in various parts of the county.”
In July 2014 as part of the first Friday event series, Downtown Salisbury Inc. hosted the inaugural Salisbury Streets Alive.
