Salisbury/Rowan PFLAG awards scholarships

The Salisbury-Rowan chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has awarded seven $1,000 scholarships for academic year 2015-2016.

The winners of the 2015 scholarships are:

The Anne Stanback-Charlotte Kinlock Scholarship, named in honor of Salisbury native Anne Stanback and her wife, Charlotte Kinlock, has been awarded to Megan A. Braun. Braun is a senior at North Rowan High School and will be attending Catawba College. She is the daughter of David and Laura Braun of Salisbury.

The Linda Ketner Community Service Scholarship, named in honor of Salisbury native Linda Ketner, has been awarded to Melissa N. Lore. Lore is a senior at North Rowan High School and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is the daughter of Jerry and Joann Romans of Salisbury.

The Bob Page-Dale Frederiksen Scholarship, named in honor of Bob Page, founder and CEO of Replacements, Ltd., and his life partner, Dale Frederiksen, has been awarded to R. Logan Jensen. Jensen is a senior at North Rowan High School and will be attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Jensen is the child of Tori Jensen of Salisbury.

The Founder’s Equality Scholarship, named in honor of Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG founder Mike Clawson, has been awarded to Taylor M. McCrimmon. McCrimmon is a senior at North Rowan High School and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is the daughter of John and Lisa McCrimmon of Spencer.

The Salisbury Pride-Scotty Ray Gilbert Scholarship, is named in memory of Scotty Ray Gilbert, a past board member of Salisbury Pride, Inc. This year, the Salisbury Pride-Scotty Ray Gilbert Scholarship was awarded anonymously to a Rowan County high school senior.

The Roger and Linda Hull Scholarship, created to honor the Hull’s gay son and awarded specifically to someone active in their faith community, has been awarded to Elane N. Kepley. Kepley is a senior at East Rowan High School and will be attending Appalachian State University. She is the daughter of Richard and Leslie Kepley of Rockwell.

The Russell E. Hellekson, Jr. Scholarship, created in memory of the accomplished musician who died in 1988, has been awarded to Andrew D. Poe. Andrew is a former student at Carson High School, graduating from the N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham, and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the son Susan Shinn of Salisbury and David Poe of Charlotte. His grandparents are Ed and Cora Shinn of Salisbury.

The Scholarships Advisory Committee members are Chairperson Merry Overholser, Michael Clawson, Dr. Mary Frances Edens, Patricia Horner, Roger Hull, Vonda Kimrey-Jenkins and Carol Williams-Swoope.

PFLAG is committed to the civil and social rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. The local chapter was founded in 2006, and in 2008, the chapter established its scholarship foundation and began awarding scholarships exclusively to LGBT students and/or their straight allies.

This year’s scholarship recipients will be recognized at the fifth annual Salisbury Pride celebration in downtown Salisbury on June 20.
