Area Sports Briefs: Brooks honored; Rowan wins league opener on road

Catawba senior Craig Brooks added two more national postseason awards on Sunday.
Brooks won the Brett Tomko Award presented by D2 Baseball News to the most oustanding pitcher.
Brooks also won the Josh Willingham Award, given to the Most Valuable Player in DII baseball for leadership on and off the field.
Brooks posted a 1.45 ERA with a 9-1 record. In 99 innings, he only allowed 54 hits and 34 walks. His 158 strikeouts led D-II.

American Legion
Rowan County jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two innings and held off Randolph County for a 12-8 win at McCrary Park on Sunday.
It was the first league game for Rowan County.
Dustin Ritchie had a two-run double to highlight a five-run first inning, and Riley Myers, Hunter Shepherd and Jeremy Simpson drove in a run each.
Shepherd and Lee Poteat had key hits as Rowan County went up 10-0 after two innings. Myers smacked a two-run homer for a 12-1 lead, and then Rowan held on.
Juan Garcia had two doubles. Shepherd had three RBIs. Harrison Baucom had three hits.
Omar Bautista was the starting pitcher for Rowan (5-4, 1-0).
• Kannapolis won 6-5 in 10 innings against Stanly County on Sunday in American Legion baseball.
Stanly scored two runs in the ninth to tie, but Kannapolis, the home team, scored in the 10th.
Chris White and Kyle Lowke had two hits each for Kannapolis. Caleb Threadgill had two RBIs. Christian Griffin walked three times and had the game-wining RBI.
Alex Rodriguez pitched seven strong innings. Christian Fisher pitched three innings.
Carson Davis had three hits for Stanly.
• Southern Rowan’s game with Eastern Randolph was washed out and rescheduled for June 21.

Local golf
Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) tees off on Monday morning at Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla., in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.
Kennedy will play 36 holes in a test of endurance as well as skill.
Kennedy, who will be a sophomore at Gardner-Webb, made it through local qualifying in Durham.

Junior Legion
Carson (6-3) won 10-9 against Rowan County in nine innings on Saturday.
Rowan had 17 hits, while Carson had 10 hits.
Zack Lee, Luke Barringer, Brycen Holshouser and winner Chase Earnhardt pitched for Carson.
Earnhardt drove in the winning run.
Cameron Prugh, Pearce Wilhelm and Earnhardt had two hits each. Earnhardt and Daniel Leonard had two RBIs each.
Chandler Lippard had four hits for Rowan County. Will Brown, Trevor Scruggs, Chandler Antosek, Bryson Wagner and John Yang had two hits each.
• Carson swept Mooresville on Friday. Carson won the opener 6-2. Prugh was the winning pitcher.
Ben Shoaf had three hits (two doubles) and two RBIs. Brycen Holshouser and Wilhelm had two hits each.
Carson rallied from an 8-0 deficit to win 9-8.
Zack Holshouser had three hits, while Logan Ridenhour had two. Sollie Holshouser was the winning pitcher.
• West Rowan won 11-6 against Carson on Sunday.
Zeb Burns was the winning pitcher.
Brett Graham, Payne Stohlsworth and Dillon Simpson had two hits each for West Rowan.
Jaxon Miller, Andrew Jerman, Sollie Holshouser, Maddux Holshouser, Blake Blackmon and Zack Starnes pitched for Carson.
Cameron Prugh had three hits.
Carson is home against Lake Norman on Wednesday.
