Scoring Confusions

Again there have been questions regarding a score of Not Played vs. a score of Average + or Average -.  An A+ or A- is a penalty score given for or against a pair that has caused an infraction.  An infraction could be 1.the play of a hand from the wrong board, 2. consistent slow play that disrupts progress of the rounds, or 3. bad behavior at the table.  The offenders receive the A- while the innocent receive the A+. Further, any pair that generally misbehaves can receive a loss of points to their final score at the end of the session at the discretion of the director.

The award of a Not Played is more complicated to explain but considered fairer.  If for some reason you don’t get to play a board, you need a score other than zero assigned. If there are 11 tables in play the top possible score for any one board is 10. At the end of the game each team receives an average score for the boards they played. It is then that the score for a Not Played board is determined. If overall you had a 50% game you would receive a 5 or 50% of the NP board’s 10 points, a 3 for a 30% game and a 6 for a 60% game, etc. The NP does NOT give a zero score on that board. It is not considered a penalty. Taking 10 as the example of a top board score, in an A+-A- situation, with 5 an average score, an A+ score would be a 6 while an A- would be a 4. If at the end of the game you had a 60% average but got an A- on a board you would get a 4 instead of a 6 on the board in question.
