Cannon School to name athletic field in honor of Randy Marion and family

Cannon School will name their stadium field the Randy Marion Field in honor of Randy Marion, who gave a gift of $250,000 to help fund the new, state-of-the-art turf-field project that will be installed this summer. Marion and his wife, Betty, have six grandchildren who attend Cannon.

The announcement comes on the heels of a September dedication ceremony in which Cannon School unveiled the new Randy Marion Family Field House. The Marions gave a gift of $500,000 to name the Field House as part of Cannon’s $7.4 million Building Bright Futures Capital Campaign.

“The Marions’ generous gift towards our new turf field is the final piece in the evolution of Cannon’s athletic complex,” said Head of School Matt Gossage. “Over the past eight years, we have added stadium lights, seating, a track, the Randy Marion Family Field House, and a strength training and conditioning center. Athletics are a big part of our school’s culture, and we can’t be more grateful to the Marion family for their leadership.”

Hanford-Dole book club

The first-grade students at Hanford-Dole Elementary enjoyed reading “Giraffes Can’t Dance” during their monthly book club.

This month’s guest reader was Tammy Corpening, an East Spencer alderwoman. Corpening brought along several jungle animals to help engage the students, which brought the story to life.  Her enthusiasm kept the students’ attention throughout the presentation.

Self-esteem was a key theme of “Giraffes Can’t Dance.” Students learned that with the “right music,” Gerald the giraffe could really dance, too.

Hanford-Dole’s Book Club is sponsored by grants from Target Stores, Schneider Electric, and Communities in Schools-Rowan.

Fran Simpson, one of the Communities In Schools site coordinators, did a parent presentation on reading and writing skills to the parents in attendance as a follow-up on the book that was read. Hanford-Dole and Communities in Schools-Rowan County are committed to engaging the parents in school activities to better prepare students and parents to work together with the school.
