Four young adults and one juvenile were rescued Friday night around 11 p.m. from the Yadkin River after their canoe flipped over 3 miles from the Hannah Ferry Road pump station.

The group reportedly entered into the river at the entrance near the Davie County line in an attempt to travel 6 miles down river to the pump station. They were equipped with a canoe, kayak and small pool float.

“There could have easily been five drownings,” Ellis Fire Assistant Chief Chuck Wetmore said. “They were lucky.”

Ellis Fire Department, Rowan County EMS, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Rowan County Rescue Squad and Davie County Rescue Squad responded.
