Solid Rock Church of God 

The annual prayer breakfast of the Women’s Ministry of Solid Rock Church of God, 1004 Locke St., is today beginning at 9 a.m. Minister Gladys Forte, associate minister of The Park Church of Charlotte will speak, with music by Praise in Abundance. The Rev. Samuel A. Washington is pastor.

 

Sandy Ridge Celebrates 149th church anniversary

LANDIS — Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church will celebrate its 149th church anniversary on Sunday. Founded in 1866 by a group of former slaves of Rowan County, the church has a continuous line of descendants that is still evident in the majority of the families of the current membership.

A special tribute is planned to honor the “Mother of the Church,” Margaret Ellen Reid Russell Sherrill, who was born on May 24, 1915 and will be celebrating her 100th birthday on the following Sunday. Mrs. Sherrill is a life-long member whose family can be traced back to the charter members of the church. During the afternoon service, she will be honored by tributes presented by James Wilkie, her class leader; Mary Knox, a neighbor. Her son, John H. Russell Jr., will represent her family. Pastor Clarence J. Shuford Jr. will speak at the 10 a.m. service with music by the Sandy Ridge Mass under the direction of Janet Murdock and C. Eugene Caldwell. There will be special recognition for members of the congregation who have passed away since May of 2014.

The afternoon service begins at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. George C. Banks, pastor of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church of Winston-Salem, who served as preacher at Sandy Ridge upon entering the ministry. He holds a master of divinity from Hood Theological Seminary and doctorate of ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

The annual Hall of Fame induction will include Vickie Griffith and Richard McKinley, an honor is bestowed upon members upon reaching their 70th birthday.

 

Youth Sunday at Mt. Zion UCC

CHINA GROVE – During the 11 a.m.service on Sunday, Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, the youth will be sharing their time and talents for Youth Sunday and Mt. Zion graduating seniors will be honored.  The morning begins at 9:30 a.m. in the new building with breakfast provided by Pat Corriher and friends.

Lyerly Evangelical

Lyerly Evangelical Church will have its worship service at the East Rowan Y outdoor shelter on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. A brass ensemble from the East Rowan High School band will play. Pastor W.C. Gaither Jr., will preach on finding God in His creation. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served after the service.

 

Hall’s Temple Church

The annual Women’s Day will be observed Sunday May 17 at Hall’s Temple. The 11 a.m. speaker will be Minister Louise Turner, wife of Rev. Louis Turner of Salisbury. The 3:30 p.m. speaker will be co-pastor Frenchie McConneaughy of God’s Tabernacle for Believers of Rockwell, along with other invited churches.

 

White Rock AME Zion 109th anniversary

White Rock AME Zion Church, 785 White Rock Ave., celebrates its 109th church anniversary on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Lee, pastor, will deliver the message and immediately following the service there will be a cookout on the lawn. Dress is casual; bring a lawn chair.

 

Liberty United Methodist Church

GOLD HILL — Sunday May 17 Liberty will have their Old Fashioned Sunday covered dish meal after the 11 a.m. service with special music by First Choice Bluegrass Gospel Band, formerly known as CJ and Friends. Liberty is located at the corner of Stokes Ferry and Liberty Roads, beside Morgan Elementary School.

 

Dorsett Chapel UCC

SPENCER — Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ is celebrating its annual Men’s Day on Sunday at 11 a.m. The guest speaker is the Rev. Dr. James D. Ballard, interim pastor of Redeeming Love Missionary Baptist Church of Raleigh.

Appreciation Service

CLEVELAND — Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, (corners Of Chenault and Cool Springs Roads), will host an appreciation service for Rev. William C. Speas on Sunday at 3 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Michael Hester, pastor Of Coulter’s Grove AME Zion Church of Newton.

 

Southern City Church

EAST SPENCER — The Trustee Board and the Steward Board of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, 940 S Long St., will have a Twelve Tribe Program on Sunday at 3 p.m. Various churches in the surrounding area will participate in the program.

New Bethel Baptist

MOCKSVILLE — The Annual Family and Friends Day Program will be held at New Bethel Baptist Church on Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m. Various choirs, singers and praise dancers will be on the program. The church is located at 3727 US 601 Highway. The Rev. William Cowan is host pastor.

 

Family & Friends Day at Liberty AME Zion

MOCKSVILLE — The 3 p.m. guest speaker at Sunday’s Family & Friends Day at Liberty AME Zion Church, 271 Gladstone Road, will be the Rev. Kinston Jones, pastor of St. Stephens AME Zion Church of High Point. Host pastor is the Rev. David T. Smalls.

 

Rhema Praise usher anniversary

The first anniversary Usher Ministry celebration of Rhema Praise and Worship Church will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Pastor Tony Barr of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Wadesboro will be the speaker.

 

Woman’s Day at Fairview Heights

Fairview Heights Baptist Church, 704 Old Concord Road, will celebrate its annual Woman’s Day on Sunday at 4 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Patricia Turner, co-pastor of Tower of Power United Holy Chuch. Host pastor is the Rev. Clarence E. Marlin.

Fairview will aso be hosting a “W.O.W. Woman’s Conference: Learning to Walk with God” on Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. with a praise party, and Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m. with workshops and speakers. Evangelist Willette Johnson of Dorsett Chapel Church will be the special guest.

 

Mt. Calvary Holy Church

Mt. Calvary Holy Church will be celebrating the 43rd pastoral anniversary of Bishop Harvey L. Rice  at the church, 1401 Standish St., on  Sunday at 5 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Harvey (Chip) Rice Jr. of Maranatha Fellowship COGIC, High Point.

 

Calvary Baptist Church premieres musical

The children’s choirs of the music ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, 2255 E. Ridge Road, will premiere the musical “God’s Not Dead” on Sunday at 6 p.m. The children’s choirs consist of the preschool through grade school children enrolled in the Music Ministry.

Community Wide Crusade May 18-22

Worship and message by Bishop Mildred B. Hines, 98th Bishop in succession of the AME Zion Church, Music by the IDF youth and adult mass choirs and Creative Expression. Workshops are each night at 6 p.m. and the service begins at 7 p.m.

Friday is Youth Night and the fourth annual Treasure Feamster Memorial Scholarship awards.

Confirmation at St. Matthew’s Lutheran 

Six young people celebrated, along with the congregation of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Affirmation of Baptism (Confirmation) on Mother’s Day, May 10, after attending class for two years with Pastor Gary and Hope Coble as their teachers. Confirmands were Lily Abernathy, Jocelyn Miller, Macie Curlee, Katelyn Sprinkle, Sydney Trexler and Granger Askew.
