SALISBURY —Hundreds of hours are spent each year as owners, volunteers and contractors restore the historic buildings that define the character of Rowan County. Countless others focus their attention on research of the past and educating others about the importance of local history.

Together, their work protects and promotes the special historic fabric bringing visitors to our area and supports a sound, sustainable and vibrant economy.

Historic Salisbury Foundation will honor the past year’s best historic preservation success stories at its 2015 Preservation Awards. The event will be held May 28 at the Salisbury Station, 215 Depot St. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the awards presentation following. Here are those who will be honored in the various preservation categories:

Commercial Revitalization through Historic Preservation:

• Paula Bohland for the rehabilitation of an early 20th century former neighborhood store of brick and concrete into the Mean Mug Coffee Co., 1024 S. Fulton St.

• The Rotary Club of Salisbury for preserving original wooden windows in the Rotary Hut, 300 W. Liberty St.

• Hedrick Realty & Investment Co. for the rehabilitation of the Hedrick Building into Bounce City and two other available retail locations.

Private Preservation and Neighborhood Revitalization:

• Chestnut Hill Neighborhood Association

• Glen and Julie Upp for rehabilitation of J.C. Cress House, 928 N. Main St.

• Jim and Kathy Carlton for restoration of Peter Kern House, 1360 Kern Carlton Road.

• Glenn and Beth Dixon for the restoration of Fulton-Mock-Blackmer House, 112 S. Fulton St.

Longtime Preservation Leader:

• Terry Holt for his many years of commitment to history education in Rowan County history.

Preservation Craftsmen and Professionals:

• Josh Billingslea, Tim Brown, Michael Butler, Gary Curlee, Ebbey Denker, Robert Earnhardt, Brad Hartle, Butch Hollifield, Gene Hudgens, Zack Oster, Jon Palmer, Gilbert Soto, Henry Trexler, Red Tucker and Alfred Wilson for their work on the rehabilitation of the 1820 Fulton-Mock-Blackmer House

• Medina Construction Company for the rehabilitation of an early 20th century former neighborhood store into Mean Mug Coffee Co.

• Chad Vriesema for the rehabilitation of the Hedrick Building into Bounce City and two other available retail locations

Volunteers of the Year:

• Ray Barber and Carol Rathbun for their countless hours and dedication as volunteers for the Hall House, the Archive room, History Class sponsored by HSF and The Rowan Museum, and the recent compilation of an alphabetic roster of all the documented names of both guards and prisoners associated with the Salisbury Confederate Military Prison.

President’s Award:

• Barb Sorel for her selfless devotion to the mission and willingness to serve whenever a need arises

Hall House Docent Recognition for dedicated service:

• Dianne Hall for 300 hours of service

• Marion Le Bleu for 200 hours of service

• Gavine Pitner for 400 hours of service.

• Linda Thompson for 300 hours of service
