Residents can ‘Paint the County Purple’ to support Relay for Life

Relay For Life of Rowan County aims to “Paint the County Purple” on Friday as Relay teams and leadership prepare the fairgrounds for the 21st annual Relay For Life event. As the opening ceremony is set for 6 p.m. at the Rowan County Fairgrounds on Julian Road on Friday, residents and businesses are encouraged to dress up their homes, stores and offices with purple bows, available from committee and team members for a donation of $5.
Purple is the official color of the American Cancer Society, and Relay For Life is its main fundraiser. With donations for the purple bows, Rowan County residents support the society in its mission of research, education, service and advocacy in finding cures and treatments for the many forms of cancer.
To donate for a purple ribbon to display on Friday, and year-round, to support the society and the hundreds of volunteers and survivors who will participate in the Relay For Life event, contact a team member or call Mary at 980-234-4479 and leave a message.
Relay For Life on Friday will include food, music, ceremony, games, drawings, silent auction and more. Show your support and celebrate the hundreds of survivors who will walk the first lap around the track. The F&M Trolley transports survivors around the track who cannot walk that distance. Later, a luminaria ceremony will remember victims of cancer and show support for survivors, too
Drawings for almost 100 team theme baskets containing such goodies as golfing packages, garden décor, seeds and bulbs, jewelry, cupcake-making supplies, technology, overnight stays, pet products, sporting goods and more, will take place at 11:30 p.m., but you do not have to be present to win.
Relay attendees are encouraged to use Old Concord Road to Julian Road to reach Relay parking, or leave the driving to Salisbury Transit, whose volunteers will transport you from the parking lot at Rowan Cabarrus Community College to the fairgrounds and back from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m.
