Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone wins CIAA golf

Livingstone won the CIAA men’s golf championships on Friday at  Larkhaven in Charlotte.

Livingstone golf was dormant for 19 years but coach Andre Springs restarted the program in 2010.

Livingstone shot 320-305 — 625 for the two-day event and won by 10 shots over Chowan. It was the first title since 1989 for the Blue Bears.

Livingstone’s Harry Standberry placed third individually, shooting 77-75 — 152. Stephen Washington tied for fourth at 78-78 — 156.

Philip Harrison shot 83-74 — 157. Lenorris Williams shot 82-81 — 163.

Standberry and Washington were named all-tournament, while  Harrison,  Standberry and   Williams were All-CIAA.

The Blue Bears earned an automatic bid into the Division II Golf Championships.

College track

Livingstone’s Quanera Hayes is the CIAA women’s outdoor track and field athlete of the week. She’s won nine out of her last 10 400-meter races.

Livingstone’s Justin Davis is the CIAA women’s  outdoor track and field coach of the week.

Women’s lacrosse

The Catawba women’s lacrosse team (9-9) saw its most successful season  come to an end with a 21-5 loss to 13th-ranked Queens in the semifinals of SAC  Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Megan Shortt had two goals.

Caroline Beggs scored a goal and finished with a school-record 51. Meredith Jones had a school-record 24 assists.

Catawba softball

  Catawba swept a SAC softball doubleheader at Wingate on Friday.

Catawba (23-15, 12-8) won 6-3 and 2-1.

The Indians have won eight of their last 10 games.

Carley Tysinger threw a pair of complete games.

She allowed four hits in the opener and fanned nine. Holli Chandler and Emily Huneycutt drove in two runs each.

Tysinger allowed three hits and struck out 10 in the second game. Gina Gerone homered and doubled.

Tysinger is 19-9 with a 1.60 ERA and 243 strikeouts.

Prep soccer

Salisbury’s girls soccer team lost 2-0 at West Davidson on Friday in a matchup of teams that were unbeaten in the CCC.

The score was 0-0 at halftime, but West Davidson freshman Taryn Craig scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half.

Salisbury (10-2, 4-1 CCC) got outstanding play from Ceci Cardelle, Katie Bullock, and Julia Honeycutt. Adna Music played her finest match of the season.

Salisbury hosts East Davidson on Monday.

Prep baseball

Salisbury defeated Lexington 26-6 in five innings on Friday in CCC baseball.

Salisbury scored seven runs in the first.

The Hornets had 19 hits and were led offensively by Alex Yang, Ryan Jones  and Zack Bates with three hits each. Jones had RBIs.

Jones and Harrison Smith combined to hold the Yellow Jackets to two hits.

“This game gave us an opportunity to get a lot of people time on the field,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. “I was especially pleased with the approach the guys who don’t get a lot of at bats took tonight and they had some nice hits because of it.”

     

Rotary tennis

The Salisbury Rotary Tennis Championships are set for  the weekend of May 29-31.

Junior events include singles and doubles. Adult events include singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

The entry deadline is Sunday, May 24.

Play begins Friday, May 29, at 4 p.m.

Reid Leonard  (704-633-1495) is the tournament director.

Benefit basketball

A West Rowan alumni basketball game will be played on May 9 as a  fundraiser for West Rowan football coach Scott Young and his family.

The format is even-year graduates vs. odd-year graduates.   

Tipoff is at 7 p.m.  at West Rowan.

The event also includes a bake sale (6:30 p.m) and silent auction.

Admission is $5.

Kannapolis Youth Sports

The Kannapolis Youth Sports Basketball program, led by coach Chavis Maxwell, is in it’s second season of organization.

It is comprised of 16 teams in four divisions,  who have battled fiercely over the last 10 weeks.

A champion will be crowned in three divisions on Saturday. The KYS Gators already have won the ages 5-8 division.

Saturday’s games will be at the Kannapolis Intermediate School.
