More Area Sports Briefs: East wins another SPC match

McCanless played tough on Wednesday and only four golfers broke 40 in the SPC match.

East Rowan shot 158 to win. Nick Lyerly’s 37 was the best score of the day. Logan Shuping and Bryson Sprinkle shot 40s, and Jacob Durham shot 41.

South Rowan shot 165 for second place. Davis Richards (38), Parker Chavis (41), Landon Johnson (42) and Andrew Hubbard (44) were the scorers for the Raiders.

Hickory Ridge placed third at 171.

Bobby Bauer and Joseph Mitchem shot 43s to pace Carson (6th, 186). Coyte Kyles and Cameron Hassard shot 45s to lead West Rowan (7th, 187).

Concord’s Walker Cress and Stephen Carroll shot 38s for the Spiders (4th, 171).

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s boys won 9-0 against North Rowan in a CCC match on Wednesday and stayed undefeated.

Salisbury plays against East Rowan, also undefeated, on Friday at 4 p.m. at Salisbury.

Rowan Hurricanes

The  Rowan Hurricanes hosted a tournament over the weekend in southern Rowan that featured  more than 30 teams, ranging from sixth grade to high school.

The Hurricanes have five teams for different age groups.

The Hurricanes 10th-grade girls went 3-0 for first place in their age division. Standouts included North Rowan’s Egypt Alexander, Salisbury’s Maria Capito, Corriher-Lipe’s Janiya Downs and Knox’s Bryanna Troutman.

College tennis

Catawba’s women (10-11, 1-8) beat Mars Hill 5-4 on Wednesday for their first SAC win.

Catawba’s men )13-9, 3-6) also beat the Lions 5-4 on Wednesday at Mars Hill.

College lacrosse

Conner Kennedy scored the winning goal as Catawba’s men’s lacrosse team beat No. 11 Pfeiffer 12-11 in overtime.

Kennedy netted the winner just 22 seconds into overtime for the Indians (4-8). Pfeiffer is 9-3.

Goalie Ryan Applegate made 16 saves for Catawba. Kennedy and Zach LaFavre had three goals each.

College baseball

Jacob Barber (Davie) drove in two runs to help Winston-Salem State beat Wingate 7-4 on Wednesday.

• Pitt Community College won 6-5 against Lenoir CC on Wednesday.

Dustin Ritchie (East Rowan) had two hits, doubled and drove in a run. Jordan Goodman (NW Cabarrus) drove in two runs, and Tanner Bigham (NW Cabarrus) drove in one.

Middle school baseball

Corriher Lipe defeated China Grove 9-0.

Chandler Teal went the distance on the bump for the shutout.

Cameron Hurd, Kory Moss, Kade Linton and Jarrid Nelson paced the offense with two hits apiece.

Stallions baseball

Sawyer Strickland pitched a five-hitter and struck out four as the Greater Cabarrus Stallions rolled 14-0 against South Stanly in the Yadkin  Valley Diamond Classic on Wednesday n Albemarle.

Noah Jarrett had three hits and four RBIs for the Stallions (13-4).  Hunter Shepherd had three hits. McConner Wallace had two hits. Travis Cone and Isaiah Boger doubled.

Carson girls clinic
