Carson got six RBIs from Ryan Bearden and rolled 10-4 against Central Cabarrus in SPC baseball on Tuesday.

Bearden walloped a grand slam in the third inning for a 7-1 lead.

Brycen Holshouser had four hits for the Cougars. Owen White and Matt Saul had two hits each.

Tanner Christy (4-2) pitched six innings for the victory.

• South Rowan lost 4-1 at Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday in an SPC upset.

Burke Fulcher had a double, but the Raiders missed several scoring opportunities early.

Fulcher (2-1) took the loss on the mound. Walker Joyce pitched well in relief for the Raiders and drove in South Rowan’s run.

Spencer Baucom was outstanding on the mound for the Trojans.

• East Rowan’s SPC game at Cox Mill was rescheduled for Wednesday.

• Omar Bautista fired a shutout to lead West Rowan to a 5-0 win against Hough in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

Bautista (4-1) struck out six and held Hough to two hits.

Juan Garcia had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons (9-5). Garcia and Trevor Atwood had doubles.

Prep soccer

Salisbury’s girls prevailed against West Rowan 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Ceci Cardelle with  under three minutes left.

After a failed clearance, Cardelle found herself in the middle of the field without pressure and fired a shot from approximately 25 yards out.

The shot was just over the hands of WR goalkeeper Joana Samano and just underneath the crossbar.

“Ceci is still battling plantar faciitis, so it was a gritty effort,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “It was a pretty even match, with neither team able to consistently maintain momentum. I don’t think either team managed 10 realistic shots on goal.”

Juliana Anderson and the back four of Kathryn Rusher, Amelia Steinman, Mary Seifert and Nellie Brown combined for the shutout. Nellie Brown was outstanding.

Next  for Salisbury(7-1)  is a CCC match on Wednesday against  North Rowan. Game time is 6 p.m.

• Carson’s soccer team won 5-0 at Central Cabarrus.

Sarah Safrit and Cierra Josey scored two goals each. Cassie Howard scored one.

Megan Bolick had the shutout for the Cougars (7-2, 7-2 SPC).

NCHSAA

In the Wells Fargo Cup competition  for overall athletic excellence, Salisbury is seventh in 2A, while Gray Stone is fifth in 1A.

• Franklin softball player Haeli Bryson and Salisbury baseball player Ryan Jones won the NCHSAA  Performer of the Week awards.  Jones led the Hornets at the plate and on the mound as they won the F&M Bank Classic Easter tournament.

Prep tennis

East Rowan’s boys tennis team is 8-0 overall after a 9-0 victory against North Rowan on Tuesday.

A 9-0 win against West Rowan on Monday lifted the Mustangs to 6-0 in the SPC.

Singles winners in both matches were Ike Emerson, Chance Brown, Gordon Krause, Jeremy Price, Addison Fry and Nik Pillsbury.  Doubles wins were posted by Emerson-Brown, Krause-Price, and Fry-Pillsbury in both matches.

East Rowan is scheduled to play at Salisbury  on Friday at 4 p.m.

College golf

Catawba men’s golf team competed at the Etowah Spring Challenge at Etowah Valley Country Club. The Indians were third in a four-team field.

Tyler Rutherford led Catawba. He was 11th with a 77. Tusculum won the event.

• Elon’s Troy Beaver (Salisbury) shot 77-73-75 — 225 in the Gary Koch Invitational in Gastonia.

• UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) placed fifth in the Old Waverly Collegiate held in West Point,  Miss.

Dixon shot 6-under  210 for the 54-hole event. He shot 73-65-72.

The 7-under 65  tied for the second-lowest of his career.   Dixon made 12 pars, five birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5, 513-yard No. 2 hole.

Dixon helped the Spartans finish ninth.

The Spartans return to actionin the Irish Creek Collegiate on  Saturday and Sunday.

College hoops

Catawba’s K.J. Arrington and Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) were named to the  College Division All-State men’s baskeball  first team.

The team includes players from D-II and D-III schools.

Pfeiffer’s A.J. Clark was named to the second team.

College baseball

Catawba’s Will Albertson once again claimed the SAC Player of the Week and NCBWA Southeast Region Hitter of the Week honors.

Albertson batted .524 for the week with six homers and 16 RBIs.

• Appalachian State’s Brian Bauk (Salisbury) went 1-for-2 and scored the Apps’ run in an 11-1 loss to South Carolina on Tuesday.

College softball

Catawba’s Natalie Naturile was named SAC Softball Player of the Week.

She batted .600.

College football

Johnson C. Smith   announced the appointment of Kermit Blount as head football coach of the Golden Bulls.

Blount has been the head coach at Delaware State and Winston-Salem State.

College lacrosse

Catawba’s women’s team beat Young Harris 17-16 on Tuesday.

Caroline Beggs  and Alyssa Corace  combined to score nine goals for the Indians (8-7).

Local golf

Linda Jones made a hole-in-one on No. 3 at Foxwood.

Jones used a driver from the red tees.  Harold Jones witnessed the feat.

•The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played in a low-gross, low- net event on Tuesday .

Flight winners were: First Flight; 1st Gross – Kristi Laton, 1st Net – Toni Iossi;  Second Flight, 1st Gross – Wendy Kinsell, 1st Net Tie – Ruth Bowles and Faye Cline; Third Flight, 1st Gross – Cindy Carmazzi, 1st Net – Joy Maughmer.

  Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators have added a “Fit & Fresh Menu” to the concession stand.

New entrees will included grilled chicken sandwiches, turkey wraps, veggie burgers and salads.

  The Intimidators open the South Atlantic League season on Thursday at Lakewood. The home opener is April 16 against Hickory.
