Area Sports Briefs: Hornets in Monday’s title game

The F&M Bank Classic concludes today with four games.

At 4 p.m., Carson will play A.L. Brown at A.L. Brown’s Veterans Field for seventh place. At 6:30 at Brown, Lake Norman and Pisgah play for fifth.

In the third-place game at CNC-NorthEast Stadium at 4 p.m., South Rowan takes on Northwest Cabarrus.

In the championship game at CMC-NorthEast, Salisbury (8-3) battles Jay M. Robinson (7-4) at 6:30 p.m.

• West Rowan lost 8-4 at Ardrey Kell on Saturday.

Harrison Baucom had three hits for the Falcons (8-4). Juan Garcia drove in two runs. Lee Poteat had two hits.

Austin Love pitched well for four innings. Omar Bautista took the loss.

The Falcons took an early 4-0 early, but Ardrey Kell scored six runs in the sixth.

Ardrey Kell out-hit the Falcons 9-6.

Prep track

In the NC Runners Elite Invitational, Garrett Ingold placed sixth in the 3200 (10:21) and Nick Cox was seventh in the 400 (52.7 seconds).

Both are juniors at Carson.

Basketball clinic

An offensive skills basketball clinic for boys in grades 6-8 will be held at Carson on Wednesday, April 8, from 6-8 p.m.

The cost is $10.

Call 704-855-5039 to reserve a spot. The clinic will be limited to 25 players.

Young benefit

A benefit lunch for  coach Scott Young and family will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle on Stokes Ferry Road.

The meal consists of chicken ‘n dumplings, green beans, corn, slaw, hotdogs,  trimmings and homemade desserts.

The meal is being catered by Debbie Suggs Catering. Pay for meal with a donation.

College lacrosse

Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team lost 19-17 to visiting Florida Tech on Saturday at Shuford Stadium.

Megan Shortt scored four goals for  Catawba (7-7)   Caroline Beggs set a Catawba record for goals in a season with 39.

College baseball

Dustin Ritchie (East Rowan) went 3-for-6 and scored three runs as Pitt Community College split four games at USC Sumter.

Jordan Goodman (NW Cabarrus had three hits for Pitt CC ands scored twice.

• Noah Holmes (East Rowan) had two hits and two RBIs for Appalachian State in a 5-2 win against Troy on Saturday.

• UNC Wilmington’s Ryan Foster (Davie) is 3-0 after pitching into the seventh inning of Friday’s 4-3 win against UNC Asheville.

College softball

Elon’s Chelsea White (East Rowan) picked up her third save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning  in a 5-3 win against Towson on Saturday.

• Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched Belmont Abbey’s recent 4-2 win against St. Andrews.

Jacobs allowed one run in six innings, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. It was the fifth win of the season for Jacobs.

• Ericka Nesbitt (East Rowan) had two hits for Campbell Saturday in an 8-5 loss to Longwood.

Nesbitt is batting .437 and has scored 34 runs.

Nesbitt leads the Big South Conference with 55 hits.

College hoops

Richmond freshman Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had labrum surgery Thursday.

Wike said the recovery period is  usually 4-6 months.

College track

In the High Point VertKlasse Meeting, East Carolina’s Amber Holloway (West Rowan) placed 12th in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.64.
