East Rowan’s golf team  shot 307 in the final round of the   18th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship on Saturday and finished fifth in the Championship Flight.

East Rowan shot 303-307 — 610  after qualifying for the Championship Flight with a 308.

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly was the top individual in the tournament, shooting  68-71 — 139.

Logan Shuping tied for 14th at 78-72 — 150 and Bryson Sprinkle tied for 20th at 73-78 — 151.

Ben Rollins shot 85-86 — 171 and Jacob Durham shot 84-90 — 174.

Forty teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Missouri, New Jersey, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Georgia competed in the three-day event.

Durham Academy shot  595 to win the tournament.

Prep track

Carson junior Zachary Marchinko finished second in the 3200 at the Mile Split Invitational.

Marchinko ran 4:23, a personal best and a school record.

Prep baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader from Triad.

In a 2-1 win,  leading hitters for the Stallions were McConner Wallace and Drake Boger with two hits each.

Caleb Threadgill’s sac fly scored Travis Cone with the winning run.

Hunter Shepherd pitched a complete game and struck out fou.

In a 9-7 win,  Tyler Hartsell had two hits and two RBIs.  Noah Jarrett and Shepherd had doubles.

Hartsell pitched a complete game for the Stallions (12-4, 4-0 SEAC) and struck out three.

Local golf

In the eGolf Tour’s  Championship at St. James Plantation, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 71-74-71-71 — 287. He was 1-under and won   $1,975.00.

Legion sign-ups

Kannapolis Post 115 American Legion Baseball sign-ups are set for  Saturday, April 11, at Beaver-Pittman Post, 615 N. Main, Kannapolis.

Junior Legion meets at 10 a.m.  Senior Legion meets at noon.

Players should have birth certificate with raised seal and proof of insurance.

Senior Legion is for players born 1996 or later. Junior Legion is for players born 1998 or later.

Rowan County

Rowan County American Legion baseball has announced its 2015 schedule. Opening night is set for May 23 — a home game at Newman Park against High Point.

• Rowan County American Legion baseball is holding sign-ups for Senior and Junior teams on April 12 at 4 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 on Lincolnton Road in Salisbury.

Players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate or a copy of their driver’s license.

Parents should plan to attend to sign medical forms.   A notary public will be on hand to notarize Form 2’s.   Any questions should be directed to team manager Mark Cauble at 704-798-9991.

Southern Rowan

Southern Rowan American Legion Baseball is holding sign-ups for Junior and Senior Legion teams on April 19 at Gary’s BBQ in China Grove.

Junior Legion sign-ups will start at 2 p.m. followed by Senior sign-ups at 4 p.m.

All players must bring a certified copy of their birth certificate along with a parent to sign medical and Form 2’s.

A notary will be on hand to notarize paperwork.

Hornets win

CHARLOTTE — Gerald Henderson’s driving layup with 6 seconds left lifted the Charlotte Hornets to a 92-91 win over Philadelphia. Kemba Walker had 24 points and Mo Williams added 18 as the Hornets won despite playing without three starters, including Al Jefferson.
