Editor’s note: This story has been updated to show the correct date of the poverty simulation, which is April 13.
People will have another chance to participate in a poverty simulation on April 13.
The simulation, called “Walk in My Shoes,” takes participants through a month in the life of families who live in poverty. Every 15 minutes represents one week. Families have to try to make it through the month — pay the bills, buy groceries, get the children to school, pay the mortgage or rent, go to work or find a job — using the limited money and resources that people living in poverty have.
Department of Social Services employees were the main participants in the first simulation held on Jan. 9.
The next simulation will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church on West Innes Street in Salisbury. People should arrive by 1:15 p.m. in order to go through the registration process.
To make reservations to participate, people can call the church at 704-636-3431 or email rowanN2N@icloud.com. Reservations for the simulation need to be made by April 9.
The simulation is organized by several local churches and nonprofit organizations.
Also, another round of the “Bridges Out of Poverty” seminars will be held in May. The seminars are broken into two sessions. The first session will be held during the first full week of May on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The second session will be held the following week during the same days. The process will repeat beginning the third full week of May.
For information about the seminars, contact GeoRene Jones, with St. John’s Lutheran Church, at 704-636-3431.
