Area Sports Briefs: Parnell throws 20 pitches in spring debut

New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) threw 20 pitches on Saturday in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.  Parnell is expected to miss the first month of the regular season.

Local golf

Rick Wiles made a hole-in-one on the 160-yard No. 3 hole at McCanless  while playing  in the Men’s Association Sunday Shootout.

Wiles used an 8-iron for his second career ace.

Wiles’ partners were Derek Lipe, Daryl Lipe, Jeff Warren  and Brad Bebber.

Prep golf

Cannon School rallied and won the 36-hole North State High School Challenge at The Club at Irish Creek. Cannon shot 286-287 — 573 and won by one stroke over Pinecrest.

South Rowan was 12th at 631. East Rowan was 15th in 650. Concord was 16th at 659.

Pinecrest’s Joshua Martin was medalist with 66-69 — 135. Concord’s Walker Cress tied for third at 71-67 – 138. South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 73-68 — 141 and tied for sixth. East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 72-76 — 148 and tied for 17th.  Concord’s Stephen Carroll shot 75-74 — 149.

College golf

UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury)  finished 19th in the Linger Longer Invitational in Georgia by shooting 70-73-72 — 215.

  

College softball

Livingstone (7-6) went 1-2 on  Saturday in the CIAA Roundup in Raleigh.

The Blue Bears won 18-0 against Lincoln, lost 12-4 to Chowan and lost 11-4 to Bowie State.

• Pfeiffer’s Sydney Poole (East Rowan) pitched four shutout innings in a 10-0 win against Barton.

• Elon pitcher Chelsea  White (East Rowan) won in relief as the Phoenix beat College of Charleston 4-3.

White is 4-0.
