Area Sports Briefs: Tysinger ties Catawba career strikeout mark

Catawba’s softball team (10-10, 0-4 SAC) lost two tight games at Carson-Newman on Saturday, falling 7-6 and 1-0 in eight innings.

Caroline Turner pitched seven shutout innings in the extra-inning loss.   

Junior Carley Tysinger posted three strikeouts and tied Lindsey Ettinger’s school career strikeout record with 720.

• Catawba’s men’s lacrosse team lost to Tusculum 7-6. Daniel Rew scored three goals for Catawba (3-6, 1-4 SAC).

• Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team lost 17-16 at Tusculum. Alyssa Corace had three goals for Catawba (5-4, 4-2 SAC).

   

Prep baseball

A.L. Brown’s baseball team won 13-1 against East Meck on Saturday in a non-conference game.

Matt Brown pitched four shutout innings and fanned five. Daniel O’Kelly pitched three innings for the Wonders (5-2).

Irvin Garcia, Clayton Gilmore and Jordan Reid had RBI doubles. Juan Morgan had a run-scoring triple.

The Wonders, tied  for first in the MECKA at 3-1,  play Robinson on Tuesday.

• Davie  (3-2) beat Ledford 5-1 on Saturday.

Jalen Scott’s bases-loaded double in the seventh was the key blow.

Colby Cranfill pitched five strong innings, and Isaac Campbell got the win in relief.

Jayvee baseball

Brett Graham was the winning pitcher and Cody LaRue had a save in West Rowan’s 7-4 victory against Concord on Friday.

Brandon Walton led the West Rowan offense.

Prep track

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko turned in a strong performance at the Marvin Ridge Invitational.

Marchinko took third in the 1600, breaking his own school record in 4:30.

  Also, running strong for Carson was Dylan Koontz. He had a new PR in the 1600 with a 4:50 clocking.

• North Rowan’s Payton Russell placed second in the 400 in 58.51 seconds at  Marvin Ridge.

• North Rowan’s Brianna White was fourth in the high jump (5-0) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.42).

• North Rowan’s Michael Streater cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump and placed sixth.

• North Rowan’s Shane Parker was fifth in the shot (44-5) and discus (124-0).

Prep softball

Davie won 10-3 against Montour (Pa.) on Saturday.

Julie Gough and Olivia Boger combined in the circle. Jessie Beck, Sarah Myers and Kenzie Smith had two RBIs each.

Anna Devereaux swiped two bases.

Stallions baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader with Providence of Columbia, S.C.

In a 9-2 victory, Sawyer Strickland pitched a four-hitter and fanned five.

Caleb Threadgill, Noah Jarrett, McConner Wallace and Hunter Shepherd had to hits. Shepherd had a three-run double.

In a 12-3 victory, Shepherd had three hits and three RBIs. Dalton Lankford had four RBIs. Lankford, Jarrett, Travis Cone and Drake Boger had two hits each.

Tyler Hartsell got the win, with Wallace and Lankford tossing a scoreless inning each for the Stallions (7-1).

The Stallions’ next game is Tuesday vs. the Charlotte Stampede at Concord High.
