Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball romps

Catawba’s baseball team crushed Anderson 20-7 on the road on Friday in the first game of a three-game SAC series.

T.J. Wharton, who had four hits,  belted two three-run homers and drove in seven runs for the surging Indians (21-4).

Reigning national player of the week Will Albertson homered and knocked in six runs to continue his recent rampage.

Blake Houston (South Rowan) walked five times to set a school record and scored six times to tie a school record.

Grayland Fowler scored four runs. Craig Brooks went 3-for-4. Dylan Richardson had two hits. Chance Bowden (Salisbury) drove in three runs. Luke Setzer (East Rowan) scored three times.

Shaefer Shepard (6-1) pitched into the sixth for the win. Avery Bowles went the rest of the way to earn his first save.

• Pfeiffer overcame a 6-0 deficit and beat Southern Wesleyan 13-8 on Friday.

Prep baseball

Drew Yoos hit a two-run, walkoff homer for Concord in the bottom of the seventh, and the Spiders defeated West Rowan in SPC action on Friday.

Austin Love (2-2)  pitched a strong game for the Falcons (6-3, 3-3) and struck out four.

Will Horsley pitched a complete game for the  second-place Spiders (5-2 SPC) and struck out five.

Both teams were limited to four hits.

• East Rowan lost to R.J. Reynolds 5-0 in non-conference action on Friday.

Logan Welch (3-0) pitched five shutuout innings for the Demons. Jake Lang had two hits.

Harrison Bell (0-2) started and took the loss for the Mustangs. Logan Towne and Alec Hamilton pitched in relief.

The Mustangs were limited to two hits. Joseph Peeler went 1-for-3.

• A.L. Brown got a combined no-hitter from Nathan Watson and Casey Ritchie and beat Vance 12-0 in MECKA action on Friday.

Kameron Sherrill had a run-scoring triple. Matt Brown had a run-scoring double.

• Carson’s game at Northwest Cabarrus was rained out and rescheduled for Thursday.

Prep soccer

Carson’s soccer team stayed unbeaten on Friday with a 2-0 win against Northwest Cabarrus.

Cassie Howard and freshman Hannah Smith scored goals. Meg Bolick had the shutout in goal for the Cougars (6-0).

• West Rowan’s soccer team won 1-0 in SPC  play against Concord.

Victoria Patterson scored the goal. Joanna Samano recorded the shutout.

• Hickory Ridge won 8-0 against South Rowan on Friday.

• Kelsey Kiser scored two goals to lead Gray Stone to a 3-3 tie with Mount Pleasant on Friday.

Prep golf

In the North State High School Challenge at the Club at Irish Creek, Pinecrest shot 284 for the first-round lead.

South Rowan (312) is 11th, while East Rowan (326) is 15th.

Pinehurst’s Eric Bae and Joshua Martin shot 66s.

Concord’s Walker Cress shot 71. East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 72. South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 73.

  

All-MECKA teams

A.L. Brown’s Avery Clinding, Nick Sexton, Isaiah Johnson and Keechan Ware made the All-MECKA wrestling team.

•In boys basketball, A.L. Brown’s Jaylon Neal, Joekeem Neal and Damon Johnson were on the All-MECKA team.

Robinson’s Daniel Spencer, Lavar Batts Jr. and Jordan McKenzie made All-MECKA.

Robinson’s Lavar Batts Sr. was named MECKA Coach of the Year.

Hough’s Luke Maye and North Meck’s C.J. Bryce were named co-players of the year.

• In girls basketball, A.L. Brown’s Aitana Grant and Shemya Stanback made All-MECKA.

Robinson’s Sydni Bickford and Brittany Vaughters made All-MECKA.

Robinson’s Kelsi Mahoney was MECKA Player of the Year.

Mallard Creek’s C.J. Kendall was named coach of the year.

MECKA golf

A.L. Brown shot 202 and finished fifth in the MECKA golf match at  Charlotte’s Tradition.

Hough shot 141 to win.

McKinley Brown’s 145 led the Wonders.

Local golf

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 69-73-73-72 — 287 and finished 25th in the eGolf Tour’s Nova Tax Group Open in Huntersville.

He won $1,375.00.

Hurley YMCA

Flag football and spring soccer  registration at Hurley YMCA  is through Saturday, and late registration is March 22-28. The league is for boys and girls, Pre-K   through 8th-grade.

The season begins April 18. The cost is $40 for Y members and $70 for potential members.
