Continuing his comeback from shoulder surgery, Appalachian State’s Noah Holmes (East Rowan)  had three hits, including a home run, in Sunday’s 6-5 loss to Texas State.

• Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had two hits and drove in a run to help East Carolina crush Elon 20-4 on Sunday.

Former Cox Mill star Travis Watkins went 5-for-5 for the Pirates.

College hoops

Sophomore Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan)  scored  28 points, 19 in the first half, and made five 3-pointers, but the GRU Augusta Jaguars lost to Mount Olive 84-75 in regional play at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.

7th-grade hoops

In the conference tournament at West Rowan Middle, two semifinal games re scheduled Monday.

West Rowan Middle’s undefeated girls play Knox at 4:30 p.m.

West Rowan Middle’s boys take on No. 1 seed Mooresville at  6 p.m.

• In Tuesday’s semifinals, Erwin’s girls play Mooresville at 4:30 p.m.

Knox plays North Rowan Middle in the 6 p.m. boys semifinal.

Hurricanes hockey

RALEIGH — Dan Ellis made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season, and Brandon Pirri scored in the second period to lead Florida past Carolina 2-0.

Dave Bolland added an empty-net goal for Florida, six points behind Boston and Washington for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers improved to 4-1-1 in their last six games.

It was the 15th career shutout for Ellis.

Beach volleyball

Carson’s  Morgan Hester and Elena Turnbull finished second in the Women’s AA Division at a beach volleyball tournament in Wilmington over the weekend.

Catawba softball

Catawba took two extra-inning affairs to sweep visiting Bloomsburg in a softball doubleheader on Sunday at Whitley Field.

The Catawba Indians rallied late in both, winning 7-6 and 6-5 to improve to 10-6. The Huskies fell to 5-5.

Down 6-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth in the opener, the Indians scored five times to tie the game then won it in the eighth. Catawba was behind 5-0 in the seventh of the nightcap before getting off the deck to tie the game and again win in eight innings.

Bloomsburg capitalized on an error to plate three runs in the fifth. Another error helped the Huskies add three more in the sixth to lead 6-1.

A pair of Bloomsburg errors aided Catawba’s cause in the sixth. Taylor Adams drove in two runs to cut the deficit to 6-4 and later came around to score the tying run on a two-out infield single by Kristen Stinnard.

Caroline Turner had come on to get the final two outs of the sixth and pitched a prefect seventh to send the game to extra innings. Carley Tysinger reentered to start the eighth and recorded a strikeout before allowing a hit to put runners on the corners. Turner returned to the circle to strand the runners.

Turner and Stinnard had two hits in the victory. Turner earned the win, pitching two and third innings of hitless relief. Tysinger struck out 10 in her five and two-thirds innings. Of the six runs she allowed, only two were earned.

Chandler went 3-for-3 in Game 2 for Catawba. Turner (4-3) got her second win of the day.

Catawba will host Coker on Tuesday.
