Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone men, Catawba women are No. 8 seeds

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team will play at West Liberty State (W.V.) in the first round of the Atlantic Regional on Saturday.

Livingstone (19-9) is the No. 8 seed in the eight-team regional, while West Liberty State (27-2) is No. 1.

• Catawba’s women are in the Southeast Regional and will be one of the five SAC teams there.

Catawba (18-11) is the No. 8 seed and will play  at No. 1 Limestone (30-1), the regional host, on Friday.

Local golf

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly won the Freshman/Sophomore division of the TGF Grandover Junior Championship in Greensboro on Sunday.

Lyerly won in a playoff on the second extra hole. He shot 72-74 — 146.

• The High School Golf Invitational is scheduled for Monday at the Club at Irish Creek. High schools from Cabarrus and Rowan compete for the Bobby Batson Award.

  The team of Lee Frick – Blake Wray  shot 62-62 — 124 and won the Championship Flight of the Two-Man Tournament held at Warrior on Saturday and Sunday.

Keith Dorsett-Ryan Honeycutt shot 62-63 — 125 for second.

SAC basketball

Second-seeded Carson-Newman upset No. 1 seed  Lincoln Memorial in the men’s tournament championship game on Sunday.

MVP Charles Clark scored 23 points for the Eagles, and they crushed Lincoln Memorial on the boards in a 63-48 victory.

Lincoln Memorial shot 2-for-14 on 3-pointers and was limited to six offensive boards.

Carson-Newman gets the SAC’s automatic berth   in the D-II playoffs, and Lincoln Memorial is sure to be an at-large team.

• In the women’s championship game in Greenville, S.C., No. 3 Newberry upset No. 1 Anderson 64-58. Colleen Leung scored 17 for the Wolves.

Anderson had an 18-game winning streak ended. Newberry gets the league’s automatic playoff berth.

Prep football

North Rowan’s Wesley Jefferies committed to Feather River College in Quincy, Calif.

All-Rowan County and All-Central Carolina Conference, Jefferies (6-4, 277) had 5.5 sacks and 28 tackles for loss as a senior.

Stallions baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader with Forsyth.

In a 12-2 victory,    Tyler Hartsell and Drake Boger had two hits each.

Noah Jarrett pitched four scoreless innings, and Isaiah Boger finished up.

In a 14-0 victory, Hartsell had four hits, Jarrett had three hits, and Hunter Shepherd had two hits. Sawyer Strickland threw four scoreless innings and fanned seven. Dalton Lankford finished up for the Stallions (2-1).
