Beginning Running Classes/ St. Patrick’s Day 5K

On Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., the latest round of the Beginning Runners Classes will kick off at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. The classes are jointly sponsored by Novant Health, Salisbury Parks and Recreation and Salisbury Rowan Runners.

The classes will include eight consecutive meetings on Tuesday evenings. Each meeting will begin with a classroom session that lasts about 30-40 minutes on such topics as shoes and equipment, stretching, strengthening, running form, safety, nutrition, injury prevention, and race day and beyond.

Following the classroom session, each meeting will conclude with a run of increasing distances, starting with a half mile of running/walking at the first class and concluding with 3.1 miles on April 28.

Cost of the class is $65 which includes the a Dri-fit training shirt, entry into Bare Bones 5K on Saturday, May 23, and membership in the Salisbury Rowan Runners for one year. Payment is due at the start of the first class.

Each participant will receive individual coaching and specialized instruction, along with a training schedule.

RRCA NC Championship St. Patrick’s Day 5K Set for Saturday

The Salisbury Fire Department will host the St. Patrick’s Day 5K on Saturday, March 14 at 9 a.m. The 5K Run/Walk will start and finish at the JF Hurley YMCA. For the first time, the event will be the Road Runners Club of America North Carolina 5K Championship.

Special RRCA Awards will be presented for overall, masters, grandmasters and senior grand masters winners, both male and female. Age group awards will also be presented in 14 age groups for male and female. Each participant gets a short sleeve Dri-fit shirt and refreshments following the event.

All proceeds go for the restoration of the 1941 LaFrance ladder truck that will be on hand. The Salisbury Fire Department plans to complete the restoration by 2017. This was the first aerial truck owned by the department.
