SALISBURY —   Two surging women’s teams met Saturday at Goodman Gym, and something had to give.

Catawba’s five-game winning streak was snapped. Anderson’s winning streak swelled to 12.

Anderson beat the Indians 70-59, with the Trojans’ 17-9 edge in forcing turnovers looming as the key statistic. Anderson (19-3, 16-2 SAC) stayed tied with Wingate for first place. Catawba (14-9, 11-7 SAC) dropped from a tie for third into fourth place.

Guards Sierra Simpson (19 points) and Lesley Woods (17) supplied Anderson’s offense.

Catawba got 16 points and 16 rebounds from Terri Rogers and 14 points from Bri Johnson.

Anderson’s last loss came when it fell to Catawba 74-60 at home on Jan. 3.  That game marked the Indians’ sixth straight win in the series with Anderson, but the Trojans broke through Saturday.

Catawba’s last lead came on two Chloe Bully free throws with 11:53 remaining for a 45-43 edge, but a 3-pointer by Heather Jankowy put the Trojans ahead to stay, and Woods followed 37 seconds later with another 3-pointer.

Anderson pulled away with solid free-throw shooting. The Trojans were 19-for-23 from the foul line.
