SPENCER — What a long, strange trip it’s been for North Rowan this winter.

The Cavaliers closed their regular season Friday with a methodical 51-37 Central Carolina Conference win against visiting Salisbury, finishing second in the conference standings.

“We weren’t aiming for second place at the start of the year,” coach Brian Lytton said after North Rowan (13-6, 8-2) won for the sixth time in its last seven games. “Our goal was not to finish second. We knew we were going to have to beat East Davidson to have a share, but we didn’t play well enough in either game against them.”

They looked pretty good against the Hornets (5-19, 3-7). North Rowan built a 25-12 halftime lead and never let the Hornets draw closer than 39-30 early in the fourth quarter. Senior Fredejah Royer matched her season-high with 12 points and Special Washington added 10.

“Our games are always the same,” Lytton said. “We want to go up and down the court and get easy shots. That ‘s what we did tonight.”

Salisbury coach Lakai Brice felt several first-half turnovers threw the Hornets out of their rhythm. But she lauded freshman Julia Honeycutt, who scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter.

“She’s a special player,” Brice said. “She works hard at both ends of the court. This was a great effort.”
