LANDIS — South Rowan’s energy level against East Rowan wasn’t great early on Senior Night, but a thunderous dunk by Tireek Wilder changed all that and led to a 53-43 victory.
The Raiders trailed the Mustangs 18-15 in the second quarter when Wilder dunked as he was fouled by Samuel Wyrick. Wyrick is adept at drawing charges, but he went for the block, and Wilder soared higher.
East Rowan (9-14, 5-11 SPC) took a 35-33 lead to the fourth quarter in a whistle-plagued game, but a burst early in the fourth quarter created by the quickness of Wilder and Tre Littlejohn fueled an 8-0 run that gave the Raiders control.
Wilder (15 points), Qwan Rhyne (11) and Littlejohn (10) scored in double figures on a night when the Mustangs limited South Rowan’s leading scorer Lavon Hill to five points.
South Rowan (7-16, 5-11 SPC) picked up 25 points at the foul line, and Rhyne and Donte Hill made clutch free throws late.
East Rowan, which made only 10 field goals, scored 20 points on free throws.
The teams tied for sixth in the SPC and split their meetings. East Rowan’s win against Carson likely will make the Mustangs the No. 6 seed for next week’s league tournament.
