Two new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 28. The induction of the class of 2015 will take place between noon and 2 p.m. in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus.

The 2015 inductees are Sandra Cash Campbell, a 1987 alumna, of Elberton, Georgia, and Matthew Shaller, a 1998 alumnus, of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Catawba’s Athletic Training Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in 2011. Previous inductees include Gary Blabon of Salisbury; Dr. Dan Burks of Salisbury; Chris Felix of Audubon, New Jersey; Dr. Jolene Miller Henning of Jamestown; Scott McCall of Charlotte; Holly Stump of Lithia, Florida; Jim Bradley of Mebane; John Lukowski of Irmo, South Carolina; Angela Shirk Sneed of Mooresville; Jeff Tucker of Jensen Beach, Florida; Bryan Fass of Davidson; Carrie Graham of Coventry, Connecticut; Ronald Ogrodowicz of Stratford, Connecticut; and Richard Sharpnack of Pitman, New Jersey.

Sandra Cash Campbell

Sandra “Sandy” Cash Campbell is the head athletic trainer and instructor in the Kinesiology Department at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. She joined the Emmanuel College Athletic Department in 2011.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Catawba College in health/physical education in 1987. She was one of the first students to enter the Sports Medicine Studies program at Catawba receiving a minor in athletic training.

She received a master’s degree from Furman University in 1990, where she was a graduate assistant in the Sports Medicine program and again was one of the beginning graduate students entering their Exercise Science Studies. Prior to attending Furman University, Campbell was employed as an athletic trainer at Vaughn Buchannan and Shelly Sports Medicine Clinic in Greenville, South Carolina.

Campbell was a health and physical education teacher and the first certified athletic trainer hired in the Greenville County School System at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, South Carolina, from 1990 until 1992. After marriage, she moved to Elberton, Georgia, and was employed at Elbert County Comprehensive High School in 1992 as a health and physical education instructor as well as the first certified athletic trainer hired in the Elbert County School System.

In 1995, she developed a wellness program and became the wellness director for Elbert Memorial Hospital. She began their cardiac rehabilitation program, which included providing outreach services to area schools.

Her passion lies in the clinical assessment of athletic injuries and managing therapeutic and rehabilitation programs.

She is married to Dr. Eddie Campbell and has two daughters, Taylor and Maggie. They have been married 22 years and live in Elberton, Georgia.

 

Matthew Shaller

Matthew Shaller is the clinic director for the Tennessee Orthopedic Clinics in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a 1998 Catawba College graduate with a bachelor of arts in sports medicine and a minor in biology.

Schaller earned his master of science degree from the University of Tennessee in sports administration in 2000. While attending the University of Tennessee, Shaller was a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the football, men’s swimming and diving and the men’s varsity tennis teams.

Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee, he was employed by St. Mary’s Health System of Knoxville, Tennessee, as an athletic trainer providing outreach health-care services to five area high schools. In 2002, Shaller was promoted to the sports medicine coordinator position and he helped create positions for certified athletic trainers for the Knoxville area schools, and he provided educational workshops and clinic in sports medicine for area coaches.

In 2005, he took a position as the Sports Medicine Coordinator at Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics/TOC Spine with duties including marketing, recruiting additional medical providers, overseeing athletic training healthcare services for additional Knoxville area high schools and working with the University of Tennessee REC Sports Department. Since 2009, he has served as a clinic director with Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics/TOC Spine. In addition, he serves as the athletic trainer for the University of Tennessee’s men’s rugby team.

He is married to Morgan Schaller, and they live in Knoxville, Tennessee.
