Area Sports Briefs: Big road win for South Rowan girls

South Rowan’s girls won 69-67 in two overtimes at Hickory Ridge on Friday.

Avery Locklear scored 37 points for the Raiders.

Cassidy Chipman scored 19 and made the shot that put the Raiders ahead to stay.

Gabby Smith scored 28 for the Ragin’ Bulls.

South Rowan (16-6, 13-2) is in first place in the SPC. East Rowan didn’t play Friday and is 12-2.

• Mercer signee Jaylen Stowe scored 33 points and led Hickory Ridge to a 70-57 win against South Rowan in Harrisburg on Friday.

Stowe reached 1,000 points for his career.

Avery Metcalf added 14 points for the Ragin’ Bulls.

Lavon Hill (20) and Qwan Rhyne (16) were the scoring leaders for South Rowan.

Carson girls win

Carson’s girls got 15 points from Sydney Huffman and 12 from Alex Allen and beat Northwest Cabarrus 55-27 on Friday in SPC play.

“It wasn’t our best game, by any means,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “We must have missed 25 layups and we were 11-for-23 on free throws, but any win is a good win at this point.”

Carson (11-11, 8-6) will celebrate Senior Night next Tuesday against Hickory Ridge.

• Carson’s boys lost 58-56 to Northwest Cabarrus, their second loss of the season to the Trojans.

Carson (10-12, 7-7)  jumped out to a 22-9 advantage with a barrage of 3-pointers and led 31-27 at halftime but couldn’t hold off NWC.

Wonder girls

A.L. Brown’s girls won 44-41 in MECKA action against Mallard Creek on Friday.

The Wonders (14-6, 6-6) got 12 points from Aitana Grant and a 10-and-10 double-double from Mariah Howard.

Grant made two big free throws with eight seconds left.

Davie hoops

Davie’s boys lost to West Forsyth 85-67 in Mocksville on Friday in CPC action.

Cooper Wall led the War Eagles (7-15, 1-10 CPC) with 15 points.

Holden Poole had 11 points, and Jordan McDaniel added 10.

Austin DeLuca scored 23 for the Titans.

• Davie’s girls won 58-51 against West Forsyth.

Ashlyn Hampton scored 21 for the War Eagles (16-6, 8-3 CPC), and Madison Zaferatos added 16.

Prep swimming

South Rowan’s Brittany Luckey placed first and Madyson Campbell placed second at the 3A Regional diving competition in Greensboro on Friday.

College baseball

Carson-Newman scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-4 win over visiting Catawba in SAC baseball action on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles improved to 1-1 in the SAC opener for both teams. The Catawba Indians are 2-2.

Catawba led 4-1 after five innings on two-run homers by Will Albertson and T.J. Wharton.

Blake Houston (South Rowan) had two hits for Catawba.

Catawba got the tying run to second in the ninth, but couldn’t get the run home.

Matt Farmakis took the loss for Catawba. He relieved Shaefer Shepard in the eighth with the Indians holding a one-run lead.

The teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader  in Jefferson City, Tenn., on Saturday.

Catawba soccer

Catawba women’s soccer coach Michael Swan announced the signing of South Iredell defender Hailey Wright and South Meck midfielder Shayna Passantino.

College basketball

Catawba and Livingstone are both home for doubleheaders on Saturday.

Catawba hosts Tusculum at 2 and 4 p.m. Livingstone hosts Shaw at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Prep wrestling

Championships in four classifications will be decided Saturday in the 26th annual dual team state wrestling championships.

The championships are held on high school campuses, alternating years between Eastern and Western sites for the finals.  All of the teams advancing to the Saturday championship matches earned victories on Thursday night to gain a shot at the state title.

Two of the championship matches, 1A and   3A are actually rematches of last year’s finals.

Mitchell (27-4) will host Chatham Central (24-6) in a 5 p.m. match for the 1-A championship. Mitchell defeated Chatham Central 36-30 a year ago for the title and was the runner-up in the very first dual team championship in 1990, while Chatham Central was the 1A-2A champion in 2005.

Mitchell downed Mount Airy 45-34 in the West regional final while Chatham Central moved into the state championship with a 34-31 victory over Rosewood.

Eden Morehead (30-2) and Fred T. Foard (39-1) of Catawba County will battle for the third  consecutive year for the 3A crown, this year at Foard with a 2 p.m. start.  Foard captured the state title in 2013 with a 41-27 decision, while last year Morehead beat the Tigers 38-28 in the final.

Morehead eliminated Swansboro 30-25 on Thursday night in the East regional title match while Foard was rolling past East Rowan 57-10 in the West.

Perennial power Newport Croatan (28-6) will wrestle in front of its home crowd against West Lincoln (34-5), with a 5 p.m. start in the 2-A championship.

Croatan is in the finals for the fifth time in the last six years, with state titles in 2010 and ’11 and runner-up finishes in ’12 and ’13.  West’s only dual team title was a 1A/2A crown in 1990.

Croatan advanced to the state final with a 43-30 victory over Dixon, last year’s 2-A state runner-up, in the East championship match. West Lincoln nipped two-time defending state champion Newton-Conover 33-29 to earn its shot at the state crown.          

There will be a new dual team state champion in 4A Winston-Salem Parkland, which had won the last eight titles in succession, did not qualify.

Fayetteville Jack Britt (24-2), runner-up to Parkland the last two years, will host unbeaten Southeast Guilford (25-0) with a 6 p.m. start.

Britt qualified for the championship match with a 40-31 victory over Durham Riverside, which had ousted unbeaten Holly Springs in the previous round.  Southeast got past A.L. Brown 39-30 in its regional final.

Jayvee hoops

Carson’s jayvee boys won 48-37 against Northwest Cabarrus on Friday.

Owen White scored 24 for the Cougars (17-1). Cameron Prugh had nine, and A.J. Banks scored seven.

North Hills hoops

The North Hills jayvee boys defeated Grace Academy 59-56.

Dean Gilmore scored 25 points for the Eagles, and Collin Lewis had 17.

• The North Hills varsity boys defeated Grace Academy 81-69.

Leonard Murdock scored 25 for the Eagles, while Chris Taylor had 16.

  

Rowan Wolfpack

The Rowan Wolfpack Basketball Club is looking for players for a seventh grade/13U boys basketball travel team.

Nick Foligno set a career high with his 19th and 20th goals of the season and also had an assist to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the St. Louis Blues 7-1 on Friday night.

The defeat ended the Blues’ seven-game winning streak and franchise-record 13-game points streak (12-0-1) — and the Blue Jackets’ three-game skid.

NEWARK, N.J.  — Patrik Elias scored his 400th career goal and the Devils sent the Maple Leafs to a franchise-record 11th straight loss.

WASHINGTON  — Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom scored shootout goals, Philipp Grubauer stopped 23 shots in his first NHL action of the season and the Washington Capitals defeated the Anaheim Ducks.
