Food company Delhaize saw its revenues increase in 2014 over 2013, according to the company’s annual report.

Delhaize Group, the Belgian-based parent company of Delhaize America, which owns Food Lion, reported €21.3 billion in revenue, a  3.7 percent increase over 2013.

Delhaize America is the company’s largest revenue source and brought in $17.7 billion in 2014. The figure was $16.6 billion in 2013.

The figures include an extra week of sales.

Frans Muller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Delhaize Group, said in a statement, “In 2014, we made substantial progress in a number of areas and believe the strategy announced in March of 2014 has resonated with all stakeholders. While we recognize there is still significant work to be done to achieve our ambitions and goals, I am confident in our team’s ability to deliver.”
“Our fourth quarter revenues at Delhaize America were solid, partly helped by inflation, and both Food Lion and Hannaford reported positive real sales growth,” he said.
“For 2015, our focus will be to further roll-out the Easy, Fresh and Affordable strategy at Food Lion and to implement the Transformation Plan in Belgium, both initiatives focused on the customer. We will also seek to accelerate growth in selected markets. Finally, we will continue to be disciplined with respect to operating costs, capital allocation and working capital.”

N.C. still has lowest rate of union workers

North Carolina had the lowest rate of union membership in the country in 2014, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It had the lowest rate in 2013, too.

Only 1.9 percent of employed workers in the state were union members last year, down from 3 percent in 2013. The national rate was 11.1 percent. Across the country, 14.6 million workers belonged to a union last year. The figure for North Carolina was 76,000.

South Carolina had a slightly higher rate, 2.2 percent, than North Carolina. But the state’s total number of union workers, 41,000, is less than North Carolina.

Virginia had a rate of 4.9 percent — 179,000 workers.

New York has the nation’s highest rate of union membership, at 24.6 percent.
