City engineers are almost done restoring phone service to Fibrant customers after more than 1,000 of them lost service last week.

Kent Winrich, the city’s director for Broadband and Infrastructure Services, said about 1,200 customers lost phone service last week when a company that provides voice over IP, or VoIP, services for Fibrant made changes to its system without letting the city know.

The change caused some Fibrant customers to lose phone service, but city engineers were able to immediately restore service for most customers once they noticed the problem, Winrich said.

Winrich said Monday afternoon about 30 customers were still without service but should have their phones working by the end of the day.

He said it’s not the first time the city has had problems with this particular provider, called Momentum Telecom, and that the city will look into finding a new provider.
