Carson’s girls jumped out to a 15-1 lead after a quarter and won 60-34 at Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday.

“It was sloppy, but every win is much needed and every win is important to us as we fight for a playoff spot,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said.

Carson (8-10, 5-5 SPC) got 12 points from Sydney Huffman, who has been in double figures three of the last four games. Alex Allen scored 11 to extend her two-season streak of double-figure games to 44 straight.

Olivia Gabriel, injured in  Tuesday’s game with East Rowan, returned to action and scored seven points.

Anne Marie Turney scored nine for the Cougars. Maren Shumaker had a season-high seven.

“Everyone played and everyone scored, and it’s good to have a night like that,” Misenheimer said.

The win was the 98th for Misenheimer, who has coached the Carson girls program since the school opened. Carson boys coach Brian Perry also has 99 wins.

Ashleigh Thomson led the Trojans (0-15, 0-10) with 11 points.

• Two days after setting a school record for fewest points allowed in a 49-29 win against East Rowan, Carson’s boys set a record for fewest points scored in a 53-29 SPC loss at Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday.

A 78-33 loss to Lake Norman in the 2008-09 season was the previous record low for the Cougars.

Carson is 8-10, 5-5, while  Northwest Cabarrus is 2-12, 1-9.

•  Polk County junior Hayley Kropp and South Rowan senior Cassidy Chipman  were the female co-winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.

The male winners were Tyquan Davis of Heide Trask and Kyle Menke of Wilmington Laney.

• SPC matchups on Friday are Concord at East Rowan; South Rowan at West Rowan; Hickory Ridge at Central Cabarrus, and Cox Mill at NW Cabarrus.

• CCC matchups on Friday are East Davidson at Lexington; Thomasville at North Rowan, and  Salisbury at West Davidson.

Carson boosters

The Carson Boosters Club will be cooking Boston Butts for the Super Bowl.

The cost is $30.

North Hills hoops

The North Hills elementary schools boys won 38-35 against Sacred Heart.

Aydan Patterson  scored 14 points. Pacey Watts had nine, JaQues Sloan had eight, and Stephen Johnson added six.

• The North Hills elementary school girls won 33-17 against Sacred Heart.

College track

Livingstone senior sprinter Quanera Hayes was named the CIAA’s female track athlete of the week.

Intimidators

Tommy Thompson will return to manage the Kannapolis Intimidators.

Thompson has alternated as the manager of the Intimidators and Class A Advanced Winston-Salem Dash each year since first managing Kannapolis in 2011.

Rowan Little League baseball and softball registrations are from 9-3 on Jan. 31 and Feb. 14 at Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Blvd.
