Area Sports Briefs: Davidson wins

AMHERST, Mass. — Tyler Kalinoski scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and finished with six assists as Davidson topped Massachusetts 71-63 on Wednesday night.

UMass closed the opening half with a 9-2 run, and Davidson led by just two points at the break. The second half saw five ties — the score was 57-all after Kalinoski hit a 3 with 5:53 left to play. The Minutemen got in front once more, but Davidson went on a 10-2 run to lead by six with 1:32 left on the clock. Kalinoski went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line to end it, scoring 10 of the Wildcats’ final 17 points.

Brian Sullivan added 14 points for Davidson (11-3, 2-1 Atlantic-10), and Peyton Aldridge and Jack Gibbs had 13 apiece.

Cady Lalanne led UMass (9-7, 2-1) with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys won 35-19 against Concordia.

Nick Antosek led the Dolphins with 14 points.  Will Webb scored 12.  Ben Childress had six.

  Jay Sowers scored six for Concordia.

College football

Johnson C. Smith announced the resignation of head football coach Steven  Aycock, effective Jan. 15.

College basketball

The Pfeiffer men’s basketball team (6-7, 3-5) is 4-1 in its last five games and is winning with defense.

The Falcons defeated Barton 82-68 on Tuesday. Mike Smith scored 23 for the Falcons, while Keith Jumper had 14.

Barton is the highest-scoring team in Conference Carolinas, but the Bulldogs were held to 33-percent shooting.

Women’s basketball

Pfeiffer women’s basketball team (5-8, 4-5 CC) couldn’t overcome 30 turnovers and lost 66-49 to Barton on Tuesday.

   Meg Pritchard led the Falcons with 13 points and eight rebounds. Carter Williams scored 11.

South Rowan YMCA

The South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations for Adult Church League basketball through Feb. 5.

A captain’s meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m.

Games will be played  Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings, and   begin the week of Feb. 23.

East Rowan YMCA

The  East Rowan YMCA is registering for a high school boys basketball league.

This is a county-wide league for grades 9-12. Registration is through Jan. 24.
