Area Sports Briefs: SAC reaches football agreement with UNC Pembroke

  The South Atlantic Conference announced a four-year football scheduling agreement with UNC Pembroke. All SAC teams will play UNCP starting from 2017-2020.

The eight SAC member institutions  now have another common in-region opponent, while it gives the Braves an opportunity to play a complete schedule against Division II opponents.

Catawba basketball

Catawba’s teams are home Wednesday for a SAC doubleheader against Coker.

The women’s game starts at 6 p.m., with the men’s game following.

Local golf

Due to weather, dates were changed for two Corbin Hills tournaments.

The Kickoff Tournament is now set for Saturday, Jan. 17, while “The DeLuca” will be held Saturday, Jan. 31.

Parks and Rec

Salisbury Parks and Recreation is registering for girls basketball (ages 7-15) and coed basketball (ages 5-6) until Jan. 17. Register online at www.salisburync.gov/play.  Call 704-638-5289.

8th-grade hoops

Knox’s girls improved to 13-0 with a 31-20 win against West Rowan Middle.

Bryanna Troutman led the Trojans with 15 points.  Taylor Bailey scored 12.

Kia Pharr led the Bulldogs with 10 points.

Knox plays Erwin to finish out the regular season.

• The Southeast girls won 23-20 against North Rowan Middle.

Naysa Evans scored eight points for the Patriots. Nancy Gamewell had six points and 12 rebounds. Chloe Larios had five points.

McKenzie Shoaf scored nine for the Mavericks.

College hoops

Livingstone’s game times for the Jan. 31 basketball  doubleheader at Joel Coliseum against Winston-Salem State have been changed.

Wake Forest is playing at home that afternoon, so the  LC-WSSU games have been pushed back to 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

•Livingstone’s Kyra Crosby was named CIAA Newcomer of the Week after averaging 16.0 points per game in three Blue Bear wins.

• Livingstone’s women (15-0) still didn’t crack the USA Today Coaches D-II Poll Top 25, although the Blue Bears’ point total in the poll went up from 92 to 114 this week.

Salis. Academy hoops

Emma Nianouris scored eight points and Virginia Moy Robertson had six as SA’s jayvee girls beat Concordia 26-2.

• SA’s jayvee boys lost 30-12 to Concordia. Will Fowler led the Jaguars with five points.

• SA’s varsity boys lost to Concordia 38-24. Hank Robins led the Jaguars.

• SA’s varsity girls won 34-12 against Concordia.

Annabel Barr scored 12 points.

Ellen Simons and  Katie Leckonby scored six each.
