Police say an intoxicated man causing a disturbance at Food Lion assaulted an off-duty police officer who was out with this family.

Salisbury Police charged Johnny Lee Fore, 29, of the 9600 block of Kester Road, with resist, delay, obstruct an officer, assault on a government official, possession of a controlled substance schedule VI and intoxicated and disruptive, all of which are misdemeanor offenses.

On Sunday night, the officer was at the store with his family when he heard a loud noise and something hit his vehicle. When the officer got out of his vehicle he encountered Fore, who appeared to be intoxicated.

The officer told Fore he was an off-duty officer and that he was going to retrieve his credentials from his vehicle. Fore, who was there with a woman, tried to leave, and the officer attempted to stop them.

A report said Fore tried to fight the officer, who by that time had called for assistance from on-duty officers.

Prior to his encounter with the off-duty police officer, witnesses said Fore had been bouncing a ball outside the store and had hit a couple of cars with the ball. Officers searched Fore and found a cigarette wrapper with two grams of marijuana inside.

Fore was convicted twice in 2012 for driving while impaired in two different instances. He is expected in court next month.  Fore has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond.
