Members of the United Auto Workers Local 3520, which represents the union members at Freightliner in Cleveland, delivered 350 turkey dinners to a few surrounding agencies in Rowan and Iredell counties.

This is the second “Boxes of Love Food Giveaway” funded by the UAW-Ford National Programs Center Joint Training Fund.

Ron Guy, Jeff Hicks, Tony Groll and Jerry Hodge drove to Durham Sunday morning to pick up 350 turkeys and all the fixin’s.

Each dinner had a 12- to 14-pound turkey, boxes of stuffing, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce and corn bread mix, canned vegetables, cake mix and frosting.

The dinners were split up between the Triad Dream Center in Statesville, Yadkin Christian Ministries in Yadkinville and Rowan Helping Ministries in Salisbury.

Last year the local received the same gift, and it was distributed among laid off union members. Since then, Freightliner has hired back many workers as demand for heavy trucks has picked up, so the local passed the gift on to others in need.

“The UAW helps more than just the workers inside our plant,” a press release from Loca. 3520 said. “We also help members of our communities who are in need. We are just part of a social movement that believes in opportunities for all.”
