Area Sports Briefs: North Rowan grad Hargrave named FCS All-American

South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan)  was selected as the Willie Davis Defensive Player of the Year by BOXTOROW.com.

On Thursday, Hargrave  6-2,295), the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the FCS All-America team.

Hargrave had 16 sacks and 24 tackles for loss this season. He tied the FCS record with six sacks in a victory over Bethune-Cookman.

Davie County hoops

Davie’s basketball teams won against the Australian touring teams from Diamond Valley on Thursday.

Davie’s girls (7-2) won their seventh in a row, taking a 59-47 victory.

Madison Zaferatos scored 19 for the War Eagles. De’jah Joyner scored 15, and Ashlyn Hampton had 13.

• Davie’s boys (3-5) won  62-51 vs. the Aussies. Jordan McDaniel led the War Eagles with 18 points. Heath Slabach and Nic Starnes scored nine points each, and Holden Poole had eight.

Davie is scheduled to play on Saturday at Alleghany, but weather could be a factor.

More prep hoops

On Friday, Salisbury is at East Rowan, West Rowan plays at Concord, and  Hickory Ridge is at South Rowan.

• Robinson’s boys beat A.L. Brown 73-59 in MECKA action on Thursday.

Joekeem Neal led the Wonders with 15 points.

Daniel Spencer scored 19 to pace the Bulldogs.

• Robinson’s girls handed the Wonders their first loss.

Ashley Bearden scored 15 for the Bulldogs, and Kelsi Mahoney had 12. Kyla Downs scored 10 for the Wonders. Aitana Grant had nine.

• Cox Mill’s boys romped 101-73 against Central Cabarrus on Thursday.

•  Sylvetta Bost scored a career-high 14 points for South Rowan in a 52-45 win at Central Cabarrus. Cassidy Chipman scored 16, and Avery Locklear scored 15.

 

Prep wrestling

East Rowan won 48-30 against West Rowan. The Mustangs are 9-1 and 3-0 in the SPC.

College volleyball

Averett volleyball player Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) was voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division All-State women’s volleyball team.

The senior setter, was  All-America Honorable Mention and All-South Region.

Barringer  ranked fifth in the country in total assists.

 8th-grade hoops

West Rowan’s boys won 40-34 against Erwin.

Payne Stolsworth scored 18, Anthony Chance had 14, and Robert Caldwell had eight for the Bulldogs. Devin Basenback led the Bulldogs on the boards. Caldwell sparked the defense.

Gabe Hinceman scored 17 for Erwin. Hunter Eagle had eight, and Bryson Wagner added five.

• Southeast’s boys won 55-17 against Corriher-Lipe.

Josh Lee scored 11 points for the Patriots. Cole Hales had five points and 10 assists.

 

Salisbury Academy  

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls won 17-5 against Sacred Heart. Maggie Dees led the Jaguars with six points.

• Dees scored eight points and Emma Nianouris had six in a 22-18 loss to North Hills.

• Salisbury Academy lost 36-30 to Sacred Heart in the jayvee boys game. Nicholas Peltz led the Jaguars with 19 points. Graham Smith added six.

 

North Hills hoops

The North Hills elementary school boys beat Salisbury Academy 45-31.

Aydan Patterson scored 14 points for the Eagles. Joey Caraccio had eight, and JaQues Sloan scored seven. Stephen Johnson and Pacey Watts scored five each.

 Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 36-27 against Hickory Christian.  Mary Sobataka scored 28 for the Dolphins. Olivia Dagenhart scored eight.

• Sacred Heart’s varsity boys lost 50-46 to Hickory Christian. Blake Shellhorn led the Dolphins with 14 points. Bill Fisher had 13. Jack Fisher scored seven.

• Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls won 25-20 against Hickory Christian.  Rachel McCullough led the Dolphins with 21 points.  Hannah Carr and Faye Carol Shellhorn led the defense.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys lost 34-22 to Hickory Christian.  Ben Childress scored seven points.  Jalon Walker added six.

 Livingstone track

Livingstone sprinter Quanera Hayes was named CIAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.

• Livingstone’s Justin Davis (West Rowan) was named CIAA Coach of the Week. Coach Davis’ squad had seven athletes place in the top five at the  Appalachian State Invitational.

 

 NCHSAA

The NCHSAA athletes of the week are East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt, MVP of the 2AA state championship game, and girls basketball player Raziyah Farrington of Chapel Hill.

Sixty-five GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior earlier this week.

Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 66.06 was Mick Rowell. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of  66.64 was Steve Alabanese. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 63.02 was Bob Stepanian. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 65.83 was Roger Costic.

 

More 8th-grade hoops

North Rowan Middle (10-0) defeated Erwin 59-21 . Brevin Goodlett led the Mavericks with 25 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Cameron Gill followed with 12 points.  Quintous Smith had seven points and seven rebounds.

Gabe Hinceman led Erwin with 10 points.
