Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone men fall in OT

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team lost 69-68 in overtime at Paine on Wednesday night in Georgia.

Eric Mayo had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Blue Bears (6-2).

Ty Newman scored 19, and Dwight Williams added 10.

Denzel Dillingham scored 25 for Paine (3-3).

The Blue Bears went up by two points on a tipin by  Mayo with a minute left in regulation, but the  Nathan Powell  made the field goal for Paine with 47 seconds left  to send the game into overtime tied at 59-all.

Catawba men

Division I George Mason shot 67 percent and beat Catawba 99-69 in an exhibition game on Wednesday.

George Mason (3-6)  shot over 65 percent in both halves.

Despite the hot shooting, Catawba stayed close as the Indians benefited from a dozen Patriot turnovers to trail just 45-37 at the break.

The Indians (5-4) stayed within striking distance early in the second half before George Mason pulled away from a 13-point lead over the final 12 minutes.

K.J. Arrington led Catawba with 17 points. Rakeen Brown  followed with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) also reached double figures with 10 points.

Shevon Thompson had a big night for George Mason. He posted a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson hit on 13-of-15 field goal attempts and also blocked three shots.

Catawba will close its pre-Christmas schedule at J.C. Smith on Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. tipoff.

Jayvee basketball

Carson’s jayvee boys won 63-42 against Salisbury for their ninth straight victory.

Owen White scored 16 for the Cougars. Cameron Prugh (14), Jailen Williams (13) and Terin Myers (12) also were in double figures.

• Carson’s jayvee girls won against the Hornets behind 19 points by Sydney Taylor.

 

Wells Fargo Cup

Central Carolina 2A

Salisbury is on top of the the Central Carolina Conference in the race for the Wells Fargo Cup.

The Hornets racked up first-place finishes in boys soccer, volleyball, girls golf, girls tennis and boys cross country. League titles in those five sports gave Salisbury 67 points, nine more than second-place West Davidson.

North Rowan is fifth in the standings, with 30 points, after the fall sports season.

South Piedmont 3A

Carson holds the lead in the Wells Fargo Cup standings for the South Piedmont Conference. The Cougars scored league championships in boys soccer, boys cross country and girls golf. They scored 292.5 points and lead second-place Cox Mill by just five points. The Chargers snagged titles in volleyball and women’s tennis.

East Rowan ranks sixth, West Rowan seventh and South Rowan ninth.

Mecka 4A

A.L. Brown sits third in the Wells Fargo Cup standings through the fall 2014 sports season. The Wonders won the league title in boys cross country. Hough is first in the standings, and Mallard Creek is second.

Central Piedmont 4A

Davie County is sixth in the Wells Fargo Cup standings after the season. Reagan leads the league with 320 points after winning league crowns in football, boys soccer, girls golf, volleyball and girls cross country.

 

Prep basketball

Hickory Ridge’s boys romped 94-45 against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

Jaylen Stowe scored 21 for the Ragin’ Bulls. Javon Smith had 19.

• Hickory Ridge’s girls won 60-30  over Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

Gabby Smith and Sydney Miller scored 11 points each.
