When the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and Piedmont Dance Theatre collaborate once more to present the family classic “The Nutcracker,” audience-goers will thrill to new sets, new costumes, even new dancers!  Performances are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 20 (6:30 PM) & 21 (2:30 PM), at Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College.  Reserved seating is offered, and tickets can be purchased on-line by visiting salisburysymphony.org.

Choreographed by Piedmont Dance Theatre Artistic Director, Rebecca Massey Wiley, this year’s production boasts an experienced cast and its first African-American Clara:  Kayla Goldsberry will be performing her first principal role as Clara.  The 14 year old is an 8th grader at Davidson Day School and has been dancing since she was 4 years old.  Just recently Kayla flew to New York City to see Misty Copeland – American Ballet Theatre’s first African-American Clara – perform and was able to meet with her backstage.

As always, Music Director David Hagy promises an impressive orchestra sound with over 50 musicians, including two harps and the celeste.  And, it is no secret that Music Director David Hagy enjoys this artistic event; he has often said that the “Nutcracker” collaboration with the Piedmont Dance Theatre is his “favorite concert of the year!”
