Aitana Grant scored a career-high 28 points to lead A.L. Brown’s girls to a 64-55 win against North Meck in the Wonders’  MECKA opener on Friday at Bullock Gym.

Esther Kituku had 11 points for the Wonders, and Shemya Stanback had seven.

A.L. Brown (6-0) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half.

Prep hoops

Nic Starnes scored 21 points and Jordan McDaniel had 17, but Davie’s boys lost 76-62 to North Davidson in CPC action on Friday.

Jayvee hoops

Cameron Prugh scored 16 points to lead Carson’s jayvee boys to their seventh straight victory.

Carson won 49-29 at South Rowan on  Friday.

Owen White had 11 points for the Cougars. Elijah Moss scored six, while A.J. Banks had five.

 

8th-grade hoops

Mooresville’s girls won 34-17 against Southeast.

Macy Martin and Madison Moore had six points each.

Nasya Evans had 10 points and eight rebounds for Southeast.

• China Grove’s girls won 23-21 against Southeast.

Zoie Lee had 13 points for China Grove.

Kaitlyn Honeycutt had 12 for the Patriots.  Nancy Gamewell had 10 rebounds and  nine  blocked shots. Macy Woody had eight rebounds.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys lost 34-16 to Summit School. Charlie Barr led the Jaguars with five points.

• Salisbury Academy’s  girls won 31-19 against Summit.

Katie Leckonby led the Jaguars with 11 points. Ellen Simons and Annabel Barr  scored five each.

The Jaguars take on North Hills Tuesday.

 

Christmas camp

Former Catawba men’s coach Jim Baker will conduct a Christmas basketball camp at Hall Gym on  Dec. 29-31. There’s a full day camp for ages 7-up and a half-day camp for ages 5-8.

North Hills

The North Hills girls won 63-42 against Grace Christian.

Sieria Eagle had 19 points for the Eagles, and  Olivia Houghton scored 18.

Catherine Johnson and Jordan Plummer added six each.

Prep football: 4A

WINSTON-SALEM  — Mike Hughes threw for two touchdowns and ran for 85 yards to help New Bern beat Charlotte Catholic 23-15 on Friday night in the Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Hughes was named the game’s most valuable player for the Bears (16-0), who won their third state title. He threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Soileau late in the first half, then had a 60-yard scoring toss to Rasheed McCoy for a 23-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Jaret Anderson ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars (14-2), the last coming to cut the deficit to 23-15 with 7:58 left. Catholic got one more possession, but Shamond Squires intercepted a pass from John Walton near midfield with 1:51 left to allow New Bern to run out the clock.

Charlotte Catholic was going for its fourth state title and first since 2005.

Prep football: 1AA

RALEIGH  — Johnnie Glaspie rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff for another score to lead Wallace-Rose Hill past Boonville Starmount 34-21 on Friday night in the Class 1-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Glaspie, the game MVP, finished with 113 yards rushing while Keyshawn Canady rushed for 119 yards and a 72-yard touchdown to help the Bulldogs (15-1) earn their fourth state title and second in five years.

Glaspie returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown and scored on runs of 23 and 1 yard. His final TD gave Wallace-Rose Hill its largest lead at 34-14 midway through the third quarter.

Wallace-Rose Hill rushed 50 times for 320 yards and attempted only one pass.

John Johnson rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown and Zach Freed returned a fumble 51 yards for a score for Boonville Starmount (12-4), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped.

College football: FCS

DURHAM, N.H. — Sean Goldrich passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as top-seeded New Hampshire survived several scares before pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 35-30 win over Chattanooga on Friday night in an FCS playoff quarterfinal.

R.J. Harris had 172 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, taking a screen pass 61 yards with 11:04 remaining for New Hampshire’s second touchdown in a span of 2 minutes, 19 seconds.

The two quick scores allowed the Wildcats (12-1) to finally pull away and advance to the national semifinals for the second straight year. New Hampshire also reached 12 wins for the first time in school history despite being outplayed by the Mocs (10-4) for the first three quarters.

Chattanooga finished with 566 yards of offense to New Hampshire’s 329 — 121 of which came during the Wildcats’ rally in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Huesman ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 335 yards and another TD, completing 28 of 37 passes, for Chattanooga. He also had the only turnover, a pass Nick Cefalo intercepted with 8:04 remaining to help New Hampshire seal the victory.

Wolfpack wins

RALEIGH — Former Davie County War Eagle Caleb Martin never looked nervous in his first start for North Carolina State. The freshman simply turned in his best performance of the young season to make up for the surprise absence of the Wolfpack’s top scorer.

Martin scored a season-high 17 points to help N.C. State beat Charleston Southern 86-50 on Friday night despite playing without Trevor Lacey due to an ankle injury.

The 6-foot-6 wing matched his previous high of 15 points in the first 9 minutes, and that had the Wolfpack (8-1) rolling early.

“I was surprised but at the same time excited and anxious to go out there and play my game,” Martin said of getting the start, “ (and) just show we’ve got people who can back each other up no matter what.”
