The members of the Rowan Red Cap Hatters have been giving to the Christmas Happiness for about two years and just wanted to give to a local charitable organization, said member Gloria Rabon.
Rabon said this chapter of the Red Hat Society was formed six or more years ago.
“We just wanted to help out the children in Rowan County. We are a bunch of women who get together once a month,” she said.
The Red Hat Society is a social group initially targeted at women aged 50 and older, but universally chapters accept women of all ages. The group’s primary purpose is social interaction.
Rabon said they simply discussed where they wanted their money to go and they collectively chose the Christmas Happiness Fund.
“We decided that would be the best thing to do for our community,” she said.
The donations to the Christmas Happiness Fund come from people in the community who earmark their gift in memory or honor of someone. Donations are brought to the Salisbury Post during business hours. The money is then given to the Salvation Army of Rowan County to distribute to eligible families.
