Area Sports Briefs: Three Indians, LC’s Hendricks on all-region teams

Catawba senior center Taylor Fender, senior linebacker Jason Taylor and junior DB Mark McDaniel (South Rowan) were named to the Beyond Sports Network all-region football team.

All three are on the third team.

Livingstone receiver Jalen Hendricks was a first team all-region pick.

Women’s hoops

Lenoir-Rhyne guard Jazmine Charles, who starred at Central Davidson, was  named South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The senior  averaged 24.5 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bears to a pair of wins.

Men’s hoops

Brevard senior Darius Moose (Carson)  averaged 27 points per game, shot 56.7 percent and was 12-for-12 from the free throw line to win SAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.

Catawba clinic

The Catawba  men’s basketball coaches will be holding a Christmas Developmental Skills Clinic on December 22-23 at Goodman Gym.

The two-day clinic is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 13.

Instruction at the clinic will run from 9-4 with participants allowed to arrive one hour early and leave at 5 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $75.

College track and field 

Livingstone kicked off the track season at the  Appalachian Indoor Open and had two first place finishes, two NCAA qualifying times and four school records.

NCAA runner-up Quanera Hayes won the 400 for the women’s team in 55.29 seconds and ran 24.37 in the 200 for  a Division II provisional qualifying mark.

8th-grade hoops 

Janiya Downs and Rhiannon Kimmer scored 20 points each as Corriher-Lipe beat North Rowan Middle’s girls 54-28.

Bil’Lizah Connor scored 21 for the Mavericks, and McKenzie Shoaf scored six.

Corriher-Lipe (6-1) plays Erwin on Thursday.

 

Prep hoops 

Davie’s boys lost to Reagan 89-40 in CPC basketball on Monday.

Dylan Shoffner scored 14 to lead the War Eagles.

Jacob Hartle reached the 1,000-point milestone for Reagan.

• North Rowan’s boys won 66-56 at Charlotte’s Crossroads Charter on Monday.

• Robinson’s boys beat Myers Park 76-59 on Monday to stay unbeaten.

Connor Boothe scored 25 for the Bulldogs. Daniel Spencer had 18 and Jordan McKenzie scored 16.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys lost to North Hills 39-29.

Archie Dees scored seven points for the Jaguars. George Fisher had six, and Sam Combs and Mitch Jeter scored five apiece.

• Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls won 36-26 against North Hills. Katie Leckonby shot 7-for-9 on free throws and scored 13 points.   Lila Harry scored eight  points, Ellen Simons added six, and  Annabel Barr scored five, all on free throws.

The Jaguars play at Statesville Christian Tuesday.
